Where do I begin...
1) Faulty flasher - fixed under recall.
2) CD skips, more often in winter- replaced radio twice under warranty. Problem remains.
3) Tire noise - service bulletin.
4) Water leak near HVAC blower area due to poor sealing - service bulletin.
5) Driver seat belt anchor at B pillar - rattle noise from day 1.
6) Blower resistor burned out @ 40K miles.
7) Driver A pillar trim garnish - rattle noise from day 1.
8) Engine does not start the first time - PCM software.
9) Replaced serpentine belt at 57K miles
10) Replaced upper and lower intake gasket at 57K. When the tech at dealership replaced the gaskets, he messed up 10 other items:
a) forgot to screw MAP sensor in place.
B) misplaced ignition wire attachment bracket.
C) forgot to clamp vacuum hose in place.
D) engine oil splashed over wiper cowl screen and engine block.
E) misroute engine harness wire.
F) forgot to attach inline connector onto attachment clip.
G) alternator wire touching engine block.
H) power steering hose too close to engine bolt
i) pot of coolant near the area where tech bleed coolant from
j) engine oil mark on side fenders and door handle.
I guess all the cost saving measures has finally shown up on vehicle reliability.
The ride and handling is great. However, the build quality and reliability has been poor. Worse than the older Chevy I owned.
I completely agree. We have had nothing but problems with our 2001 Grand AM GT, such as:
- Both head gaskets
- Wheel bearings
- Serpentine belt
- Right & left tie rods
- Passlock sensor
- As well as two other sensors that I'm not sure of the names.
This car has been a nightmare.
I'm the owner of original post. At 59K miles, my driver side window regulator motor stopped working. I'm anxious to know what's next. Stay tuned...
I am dealing with PASSLOCK issues AND the driver side window will only go down when it is warm outside. I believe there may be a recall on that particular part - but I am wondering if there is one on the PASSLOCK?
Have either of you had the 'no start' issues?
Driving home the other day the security light came on and stayed on the entire drive home. I was scared that the car was going to die in the middle of the road. Definitely not a good feeling when you have an infant in the back seat.
The security light may be tied to the PASSLOCK. I never had a no start.
UPDATE FROM AUTHOR OF ORIGINAL POST:
CD player is not playing CD (intermittent). Skips easily. Delphi Monsoon stereo sucks!
I have had my 2001 Grand Am GT for 9 months and I had to get the theft device fixed (car did not start).
Driver side window only works when it wants to.
Currently the lower intake is leaking.
The whole radiator issue with the car is unbelievable ($$$$$$).
Nice looking car, but nothing but problems.
I had the security light come on several times before my first and so far only no start. That'll leave you stranded for about 10 minutes while the system resets. Passlock is more problems than it's worth!
I had my car for 6 days and some security thing messed up on it and it shut the fuel pump off and some other things... now I'm stuck with a payment on a car that I can't afford to fix because the warranty doesn't cover those things... I wish I would have NEVER bought the car.
I have a 99 Grand Am GT, nothing but problems. Broken front right coil spring, trac off due to bad wheel bearing.
Just last night the security light came on and the car was a no start, took out the lock cylinder and cleaned it, and same issues, wait 20 minutes and it'll start.
Not worth the money to buy this car if you want reliabilty. Looks, yeah, but the car overall is falling apart electrically and mechanically. I would advise to not buy. I'm still in the process of tryin.
I am the owner of a 2001 Grand Am GT, a former owner of a 1999 Grand Am, and my father owns a third 1999 Grand Am and the problems are more of the same. The window regulators on all three driver's windows were bad. All three had the blower resistor go out, my father's more than once before fifty thousand miles. I am the former owner of the aforementioned Grand Am, it was my wife's that blew a head gasket after 81K. I have a short in the driver's door in the 2001, that causes the instrument warning lights to illuminate, it has already been replaced. And then of course all the recall notices. I am very dissatisfied with this product.
UPDATE from the owner of original post:
At 60K miles, the knob on the HVAC control head broke. Replaced it at $10 each. Cheap.
Uhh...I think I accidentally stumbled into some alternate universe here. Is this the Pontiac Grand Am you guys are talking about?? I have a 2001 SE-1 that in 6 years has never had one single problem. I know DOZENS of people who own these cars. Some have well over 200,000 miles on them. NONE of these folks have EVER had a problem. Beam me up Scotty!! I'm on the wrong planet!!!
We just got our 2001 Grand Am SE back from the dealer and parted with $115 for a fix related to the security light illuminated, (solid, but it also blinks too I believe). I guess that was for the diagnostic, although this seems to be a glitch in these cars that should in my opinion be covered by Pontiac. We were told that the security system lost its program, which seems the case. A worn key, a possible tampering episode, or a GLITCH was explained as the probable causes. The key was a little worn so that's a good theory. Don't think it was tampered with as no other evidence supports that. A factry glitch of course has strong possibilities also. It would be nice if there was a free update if this is the case, but that's not that's another topic.
The security light came on the first time and it didn't start. I believe normal operation for a security intervention is to let the engine fire for a brief second, then it just cranks without starting. On the second try, it started. Not sure if the light was on or off, (not my car).
Next time the light came on, in the morning, it wouldn't start and stayed that way. Some people say wait 10 or 20 minutes, but this didn't help. Had it towed and the dealer said it lost it's program and that it being an intermittent failure which could not be duplicated after it was re-coded, the service report advised there may possilby be another underlying cause as of yet undermined. We'll see, thx to this forum for giving me some ideas, and you have mine now. cheers, botar.
2001 Grand Am GT 75th Anniversary Edition. Issue with Dexcool. No recall. BCM shot. Car wouldn't start. Sounds like fuel pump problem, but it isn't. Try $1000 to replace! No recall.
Low mileage car. Well cared for.
Unless and until GM addresses these issues, Pontiac will follow in the tire tracks of Oldsmobile and Buick. Dex-cool issue is frankly, inexcusable. Same problem arose on our 1995 Grand Am GT LONG before the 2001 came out. GM had years to correct the gasket issue and failed...
Someone help me... 2001 grand am se- security light going on and off & car isn;t starting... need advice.
