"Good ride, gas mileage lots of work to keep it going"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

My first problem was the carpet. The carpet wore through at the back of the mat. Then the heater core started to leak, I replaced that. All the brakes rotors pads and shoes. Then the alternator. The next thing was the radiator started leaking replaced that, then the trouble really started. The water pump went replaced the pump the belt the belt tensioner. Then the oil started leaking Had to take it appart again and back again. Every thing was fine for about 40,000 then the radio volume thing pull out to turn up or down. Then the key in the ignition would not turn off all the way so you can't get the key out, wait a few minuets and you can hear a click and the key will turn off. This has been going on for about a year now the key in the switch won't turn on at all, I have had several keys made even by the dealer. I have done all the work to this car, but this I can't figure out!Anyone else have this trouble with the switch, this does not seem to match the recall trouble. Maybe the security system...

General comments?

The Grand AM electrical system, radios, brakes seem to cause some problems for everyone.

There are TSB's (Technical Service Bulletin) that address the ignition switch problem.

There is also a Government Recall on the ignition.

I find it hard to believe the dealer wasnt aware of this.

Do a google search for recall & TSB info on the make/model/yr then print it out & take it to your dealer.

Recall's are a serious matter & are repaired for free. In this case, ignition switch problems can lead to the basic "no start" problems to severe problems like fire & locking the steering wheel while driving.
