2001 Pontiac Grand Am SE from North America - Comments

"Nice looking money pit"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Fuel pump has had to be replaced twice. Once for breakage and then again because the fuel sensor was not working to indicate correct amount of fuel. This was not due to the bad gas that was in some areas.

Front disc brake calipers had to be replaced at 60,000 miles because the pads would not engage flat on the rotor.

Oil pressure sensor unit has blown completely out causing me to lose all oil and stranded in the middle of the highway thinking that my car had just blown up.

Pass lock sensor has been shorted out twice in the last 14 monthes causing the car not to start because it thought it was being stolen.

The BCM unit has shorted out and had to be replaced, again it left me stranded in the middle of nowhere.

Now it sounds like the turn signals are constantly on and this is after having the turn signal circuit board replaced due to recall. The car has suddenly developed a problem with the air conditioning working for 15 minutes and then shutting off for 2 minutes by blowing hot air and then coming right back on for 15 minutes and then off again.

I have probably spent almost 3000 dollars in repairs over the last 4 years. When it is paid off it gets sold off.

General comments?

Other than the electrical problems that have plagued the car it has held up very well with 2 grandchildren and a teenager driving it part time.

I'm sorry to hear that you've encountered so many problems with your Grand Am, and I don't really think your case is typical. We've owned and driven GM cars and trucks for nearly 40 years and have never had problem one with any of them. Our current 6 year old Grand Am has never had a single problem and runs and looks as good as it did the day it rolled off the assembly line.

I have a 2001 Grand AM that has had numerous electrical and mechanical problems. I have had the passlock problem, the BCU problem, blinker problem, you name it I have had it. I have also been stuck stranded in random areas and stuck with towing and getting it fixed. I will never buy GM again, nor an American made car for that matter.

Gee, I love these folks who think Japanese cars are assembled by little Elves in a hollow tree and are divinely protected from problems for all eternity. BALONEY!! We've had two Japanese cars and they were more trouble than every American car we've ever owned COMBINED!! The Germans and Japanese build lemons too (LOTS of them!!)

Hey I was just reading about your problems with the Grand am SE 2001. The constant ticking sound that you are hearing has nothing to do with your blinker system if you look at it they will still work. It is called your Multi Functional Switch that is probably gone. Mine went also and I got the dealership to look at it. There is a recall on the car for a relay that makes the switch go faulty. The switch however is not covered. For the brakes I don't know where you are going the reason the need to be replaced is because they tried to mix 2 metals that just don't mix if you hound your mechaninc enough they can list them under faulty merchandise I have had 4 new calipers on the front left and 3 new calipers on the front right. I have also has the discs changed twice in a year and a half.

Hope this helps you out.

I own a 2001 Grand Am SE. In the past 4 months I have replaced the Passlock Cylinder twice and just the other day replaced the Body Control Module (BCM) which cost 268 dollars for this little black box. I have replaced the fuel pump at 25k miles. I do not recommend a GM product. Not that year model anyway.

I have an '01 grand am SE. I have a problem with the turn signal. The signals work, but the arm is loose (I think) and causing the turn signal sound to not shut off. My intake and head gaskets are currently leaking coolant. This is apparently the 5 - 6 year anniversary gift that the car gives you. This is a very common issue with these cars. It's going to cost me $1500 CAD to fix.

I have spent nearly 5k on my '01 Grand Am SE in the past YEAR. Fuel pump, ignition cylinder, power steering PRESSURE and COOLING lines, wheel hub... AND she's sitting in my driveway now refusing to turn over.

I will be avoiding GM in my future purchases!

Wow! I think Your all crazy! I have a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am SE with 144,000 miles. She is in great shape! I did replace the pass-lock system at about 90,000 miles, and the blinker recall thing that was fixed for free. Pretty minor considering the high miles and I have never had any other problems with the car. I will purchase another one when I hit 200,000 miles on this one!

I also have a 2001 pontiac grand am. Actually writing this from the waiting lounge at the local GM dealership as I'm getting yet another round of service on the car. After 90,000 I had to have the fuel pump replaced... then it needed to replaced again after another 20,000. The computer that controls the fuel injectors needed replacing as well and today the brake rotors need replacing. Since 2005 I've put over 4K into the car. Its paid off this month so now I'm just trying to get rid of it.

Don't buy this car... I don't think I'll be getting another GM for a long time.

Hmm... the Multi Functional Switch.

I had the blinker recall too, but it still continues to click after turning. My mechanic did not know what the heck it was and I have been living with that annoying tick for over a year now. I hope that does the trick.

In October of last year, I replaced the intake manifold gasket, and ten months later, I am replacing the same thing. Could it be the Dex-Cool coolant? I, too, am getting rid of the thing and saying good riddance to GM vehicles altogether.

I just bought an 01 Grand Am 4 cyl.

The problems were, the trunk leaked on one side, needed a tune up, the seat electronics were shot, and the wiring in the blinkers were the worst my mechanic have ever saw.

After everything was fixed tho, for 500$ (I bought it for 3700) it ran great!

It was a smooth ride, acceleration was out of this world, and the turning was incredible! But that might have been my mechanic. That's just in my perspective. :)

I just bought a 2001 Grand Am GT Coupe. Got rid of the Dexcool right off. Overheating was due to the factory radiator cap- Bought a Stant cap, flushed the Dexcool out, replaced it with 50/50 green and haven't had a problem since. As for the electrical, something is really weird. Sometimes when I start the car, the windows won't work or the turn signals and the check-engine light comes on. If I shut the car off and restart it, everything returns to normal. Anyone know what the problem could be? Had to replace the blower motor on the heater and, other than that, the car runs great with 144,000 miles on it.

To commenter 18:30: It sounds like you may be falling victim to the "computer demons". When ALL modern car companies build new cars, they have a very evil wizard cast spells on the computers so that the owner will HAVE to return it to the dealer and pay them thousands of dollars for 5 minutes of fiddling with something. The evil spell can ONLY be exorcised by a GM computer-certified mechanic (who is also under a spell to make money), or, if you know a REALLY, REALLY good exorcist of your own, they might be able to help you. Thus far (8 years) I have kept my Grand Am's electronic demons at bay by chanting, hanging crosses from the mirror, and leaving garlic in the console (which keeps my mother-in-law out of the car as well).
