1995 Pontiac Grand Prix SE from North America - Comments

"A nice lookin ride, but not the most reliable"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The intake manifold went bad after about 2 months of ownership. This was fixed by the dealer under warranty.

The headlight blew after a week, replaced under warranty.

Mufflers were rusted through, I had to pay to replace them, not under warranty.

U joint was broken, needed to be replaced, not under warranty.

A/c knob broke, got a replacement.

Center console lid broken, not fixed yet.

Brakes are starting to whine : ( (these cars have a reputation for being bad on brakes)

Fog light bulb blown, not fixed yet.

General comments?

Car is somewhat quick, you can't race camaros or anything, but you can keep up with traffic on the highway easy enough.

Car looks very nice when washed up good.

Factory radio does not pick up stations well, it is static-y, but it does play tapes OK. I also like the steering well-radio controls. (Does anyone know if you can hook them up to work with an after-market cd-player? if anyone has any ideas email me at fmb114@psu.edu)

Not very many after market mods on the market for this particular car.

All in all I like this car very much, I plan on keeping it for a long time, but the little things that you have to fix can drive you almost crazy.

Where did you get a replacement knob for the A/C? Mine broke and I'd really like to get a new one, I just don't know where to find it.

If your car has 1920000 miles on it and it has no history of intake gasket problems, then -yes it would be worth the $400.

Hi - I would like to know where I could get a volume control knob - mine broke off and I don't even use it that often - I use the steering wheel buttons!

I just bought a 1995 Pontiac Grand Prix for my son who is just getting his license. He loves the car, but there are a few things we are having trouble finding. The first is a console lid cover, does anyone know where I can purchase one?? Also the plastic side moldings that go over the wheel wells and across the side are peeling. Is there a product on the market that I can use on them?? Also I wondered if these plastic pieces can just be taken off and repainted??

Thanks.

This is a comment on the intake manifold being replaced and no the engine light coming on. yes it could be the head gaskets now I replaced my intake gasket at the gm dealership and drove it three miles down the road and turned around and took it back because it over heated really bad and they told me it was the head gaskets car runs great now. the engine light could be the egr valve have it checked it was 400.00 dollars.

I bought a 95 Grand Prix SE back like 3 months ago at a car auction. It was missing one A/C knob and then another one broke. The only one I have left is the fan control, so if I don't get new ones soon, I'm going to freeze over winter. Where did you find replacements? I have been looking all over, but can't find any.

Hi I own a 95 Grand Prix Se and I have the problem with the middle console lid breaking also. For the after market CD player you can find an adapter for the steering wheel controls at an automotive store. Does anyone know were I can get hooked up with a new center console lid?

Check a junkyard for your knob and console needs. There are plenty of wrecked cars that would contain these parts in many junkyards across the country. Unfortunately, the center console was a problem on most Grand Prix's of this model year, seems the hinge breaks pretty easily. Might have a little trouble finding good sets of those, but check around... they are out there.

M 1995 Grad Prix SE had 145,000 miles on it, and needed a new head gasket, which I had replaced. I also replaced the throttle position sensor since it failed shortly after getting it back from the mechanic. My check engine light also keeps coming on, but it seems to be related to the electric fans.

I have replaced the AC and volume control knobs, both identical and found at Autozone in a red package with 3 different types of GM replacement knobs. The color of the back plastic is pink instead of clear, although that is not visible. The new knobs seem slightly tighter and stick out a bit more than the originals, but are visually identical.

The only way you can still use the steering wheel controls is if the aftermarket deck has a remote with it if not you cannot set it up to go through the steering wheel I have an alpine deck and I do not have a remote so I cannot use mine its hard to get used to, but its OK.

Sounds to me that all of our 95 Grand Prix have basically the same problems, but to varying degrees.

Mine has just over 300,000 on it and is starting to show its age and mileage in a hurry. Never knew that this years brakes were ever a problem as I am running on the same set from three years ago. (over 70,000 on them) I guess its what you pay for and how you drive will determine the wear and tear on the brakes.

I have found many a good deal of parts at junk yards over the years that have saved me hundreds if not thousands of dollars. If I had of known that the center console lid was such a big deal I would have bought all the ones that were at the junk yard. I had my pick of parts off of about 10 different cars. AC, radio, heater knobs as well. Just have to keep looking around to find the best place to find the parts you need.

After all who really wants to pay dealer or retail prices for something that is really just a cosmetic part?

In response to the intake gasket comment, the check engine light most likely is coming from something you forgot to reconnect during reassembly. Some possible connectors include the MAP sensor, O2 sensor, anything on the Throttle body, EGR, and the coolant temp sensor. Any of these left unplugged will cause the check engine light to come on. I would think the most likely would be the 02 sensor as it is on the back of the motor behind/underneath the coil pack (I think its 4 or 5 wires). As for the smoke coming from the back of the motor, It's probably the valve cover gasket leaking. The most probable cause for it leaking would probably be not using some silicone sealant where the valve cover seals with the head and intake.

Hope this gets you set!

Good luck with your GP!
