I have a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP and I am having a stalling problem. I have replaced the fuel pump, and it starts, but stalls while driving. I need help please.
Thanks.
I have a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix. Same issues as everyone else on this site. (Gas gauge does not work, recall on the rack, gages on and off, right driver side window malfunctions, coolant issues, now power steering out, key getting stuck in the ignition intermittenly, car stalling after driving for periods of time) For your vehicle stalling, I did some research online, it was recommended that the crank shaft position sensor be changed, which I have had done and it no longer stalls. I hope that helps!
Someone may have said this in a previous post, forgive me for not reading them all. For all those out there with problems with your fans not working on 1-4, but working OK on 5...you need to replace your ignition switch. Sounds crazy, but that's what I did with my 97 Grand Prix GT. It has to do with carbon build up on the switch. This car is such a lemon, over $8000.00 worth of extended warranty work, and now over $1000.00 out of my own pocket. It's now sitting in my driveway with a pond of antifreeze under it, thinking it is once again my water pump. Already replaced once when under warranty. Good luck to all, mine will be sold after I fix it. Too much trouble!
I have a 1998 Grand Prix GT that currently has 201,950 miles on it. So I really have no reason to complain. I probably owe Pontiac a couple of dollars for the car actually making it that far before I had any real problems. But now its begun. I had a few of the usual problems in this review post, windows motor replacements, windshield wiper problems, headlight covers popping off, ocCasional overheating, but none of those issues really threatened to damage the car. But lately the low coolant light is on constantly and recently the Service Engine Soon light came on... I'm hoping that the service engine light is just an emissions problem since the light is on constantly and isn't flashing. According to the manual flashing is bad. But I have no idea what to do about the low coolant situation. The car still runs well, but I'm beginning to smell just a hint of that overheated engine smell when I get to work in the morning. I've flushed the radiator, replaced the thermostat and I'm about to change the water-pump again. I think old "Sally" may have reached the "end-of-life". Someone please page Dr. Kevorkian...
To the person who is having problems with their grand prix dying and stalling on the road: I had the same problem, I took the car to an Auto Parts store, and read the service engine soon code with an OBD II. The code said low mass air flow or something like that, so I swithced out the mass air flow sensor. The car still would stall, and I then had a guy tell me that sometimes those sensors are just bad and to try another one. So I went back to the auto parts store, and they switched my old sensor with a new (lifetime warranty). I put the new one in the car and it has not stalled once! Good Luck. My mass air flow was made by borg-warner with the warranty.
I have a 97 grand prix se and my wipers froze up and now when the stop they stop in the up positionits a real pain in the butt if anyone knows the solution to this please post it.
My 1997 GP has 106K miles.
The fan not working was fixed by replacing the ignition switch wiring harness. (A ripoff at the dealer, but I spent some $$ at my local mechanic who did not locate the problem.)
My 2000 GP also had the issue with stalling at highway speeds. The dealer replaces the sensor on the drive axle as mentioned by others and that fixed the issue.
I have been smelling the antifreeze smell, but pressure tested and no leak. I believe that it might be some sort of wheel bearing that is burning up. Any thoughts on this?
Also, the gas mileage just started to stink. I feel like I can see the gauge moving! Any thoughts on this?
Overall a reliable car. Buy American! g.
I have a 97 Grand Prix 3.8 SE. It's been a nice car.
I have 196.000 miles on it.
I have ran this car so hard it's stupid, but it keeps on running.
As far as gas mileage goes; it sucks. I have tuned it up & everything, but still get 16 mpg.
I am a tech 2 mech & have talked to every one I know, but I'm still at the drawing board, so if any one has suggestions, let me know!
I feel for all of you guys. I too must have gotten one of the couple quality cars that GM put together in 1998. What are the odds? I have a 98 GT with 185k miles. This car runs fantastic. The biggest problem I have had is with the doors hitting on the fenders when you open and close them. This started at about 150k. Other than that, my wipers are stuck in the up position (160k). I put 4 bones into the tranny for a 1-2 shift solenoid at 170k. This car still runs great and smooth at 80mph down the freeway and gets between 25-28 mpg. I figure with all my outlay of cash for the minor repairs/maintenance and purchase price of the car, it has cost me about 7.5 cents per mile to drive it. Pretty cheap driving, beats leasing even with a warranty. I would do this all over again...
I own a 97 GT and I too have had all of the problems that you all are describing. The car has nearly 195000 miles and I just replaced the transmission last week, the most major repair I've had to do ($1400, which is cheap for a tranny swap.) Its now about 5 days after the tranny swap it now won't shift from park and the shift release button isn't working because I've had to use it for the past 6 months. I'm close to the breaking point with this car, its been in the shop so much everyone there knows me by name and I know all of them! I've spent probably over 5000 out of pocket in the 3 years ive had it. I can't complain about the engine however. It runs amazingly great compared to everything else. GM nailed it with the motor quality, but missed everything with the quality of everything else. Not to mention that the car rides like its got rocks for tires. But even after all of this I still love the car to death. At 11 years old it still looks better than most cars on the road today. But the good looks can't make up for the fact that the shop has had the car longer than I have... : (

Thanks.
I realize your post is old, but to anyone experiencing this problem, you need a new fuel pump resister. It's about a 40 dollar part.
And the above poster is right... cleaning out the ign switch will fix the fan speed issues.
I find it hard to believe that this many people had problems with this Grand Prix.
I own a 97 SE and an 98 GTP. Both have had drag strip miles, and plenty of midnight runs through backroads of North Carolina swamp lands.
I beat on my cars and I have had only one problem. The mexican made, american designed transmission (4t65e). It seems that NAFTA sends our american car parts elsewhere to be assembled. Thanks Clinton. I lost reverse in both cars, but was able to repair it with a brand new one from a side impact wreck and a flood car at 3,650 bucks for both. They now have 210,907 miles (GTP) and 222,115 miles (SE) on the original motors.
I bring my cars to the dealer faithfully for proper service, just like the book it came with said to do. I look forward to plenty more miles and the joy of knowing I won't need an import in my driveway again.
My first car was a 1993 Nissan Sentra (knock sensor blew out of the block - didn't bother buying a new engine as the piece that came out was ejected through the dash console and burned the rear car seats), and my second car was 1996 Mitsubishi Lancer (two broken spider gears on warranty, failed power steering pump out of pocket and faulty brake calipers that cracked almost in half $1,040 repair cost).
To each his own I guess..
I'm the original owner of a 97 GTP. It is disappointing to hear so many issues with the Grand Prix. I just want to note that most people looking and reading up in the forums it's because they have a problem with the car.
Having said that - I've had the water pump go just after the warranty was up. Fuel pump went a few years later. The alternator bracket broke. Stuck brake caliper. Driver's side window stopped working (the switch just needed cleaning). Had an engine leak that cost a pretty penny to fix. As for the wipers being stuck in the up position, this usually would happen to me during the winter. I learned that pouring warm water over the grates where I thought the wipers connected to the motor and running the wipers for a bit would get them unstuck. And I still have a powering steering leak that I just keep an eye rather than spending the $400 bucks to get it fixed. These were all nuisance but I don't think they were out of the norm.
As for my current issue, at 164k miles both the ABS light and the tire pressure light are both on. I did notice about two weeks ago a wire harness hanging just behind the passenger fog lamp. I checked all my lights and they all work. Car was running fine so I just tucked in so it wasn't just hanging, but now I wonder if somehow it may be related with the ABS and tire pressure light. Any thoughts anyone? I'm gonna try to jack the car up this weekend so I can actually see where the harness should be connected.
I have a 97 GTP, and for everyone that is having problems with overheating and losing fluid, the first thing to look at is on the cap to the over flow tank. There should be a tube that leads from the cap into the tank. If this tube is missing, it will not allow the fluid to return to the radiator, so it will then just boil out of the over flow tank.
From my understanding these GTP versions are not that great; I have had to replace the supercharger, driver's window motor, valve gaskets, computer, and now it needs a new front sway bar, tranny rebuild, and it shudders when you get down into the throttle. I hope this helps.
By the way, if you have the Special Edition GTP, the tranny is really not designed to hold up if you do any full throttle passing.
I've had all of the above problems listed. I thought I corrected my stalling at high speed problem when I replaced the ignition module located under the coil packs. Quit stalling on the road but now after a month won't start. Just sits and buzzes from the dash, not the starter. No movement or noise from engine. Battery is fine. NO CLUE!
