1999 Pontiac Grand Prix gtp review from North America

"Great car for the money. treat it well, it will treat you well"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Gm used sub-par glue on the headlight assemblies, allowing moisture in them and discoloration. I replaced them. Two used headlights from ebay. I stalled at intersections intermitently, I though the repair was to be costly. It was an idle air sensor, easy to change out. Bought that part from salvage yard. $70 including labor. Wouldn't start after being parked once, battery cable was loose. AC stopped blowing from vents and only defrost. Pontiac dealership charged me $95 to fix a vacuum line. My Grand prix has not been perfect, but cost and reliability and good old fashioned american simplicity make for easy fixes and cheap, abundant parts.

I had a buick with the same GM 3800 series engine, but without the supercharger. the car was fairly large, but was powerful and reliable as well. I put 190,000 miles on that car with no major repairs.

General comments?

GM simplicity in their pontiac division meant costs stayed down. Offering a lot of car for the money. The 3.8 engine is rated at 200hp with an additional 40hp when the supercharger is running at capacity.

The grand prix didn't offer a particularly sophisticated suspension, the design engineers simply built the car wide and calling it "widetrack" series. takes corners well, especially with her new Perelli shoes.

The car is not really built for drag racing, but rather long trips at highway speeds with plenty of torque. This grand prix is in its element doing 75mph for hours on end across west texas. at speed around 65 70 the car gets amazing mileage, I've averaged as high as 32mph. Once you've owned a car with a supercharger you wonder how you ever lived without one.

The supercharged required some special oil. not expensive. a mechanic will change it cheap. the supercharger has yielded no problems. I believe it helps improve mileage, I believe. when the engine is working hard it will engage and pressurize the combustion chambers and add the extra boost. With the added power the car doesn't need to downshift to climb a grade or pass another car. Superchargers ROCK!

Texas summers are hot, very hot. The engine is stressed, but uses very little oil, only when really worked. In the winter, no oil is needed between changes. not bad for 105000 miles.

Lots of legroom in the front seats and back. Leather is in great condition, perfectly broken in. Heads up display quit working, I paid a dealer too much to have it fixed. but it is a nice option to have for city driving to keep your eyes on the road. took some getting used to. great option.

I would recommend to anyone that they purchase a new or used grand prix. a lot of car for the money. Almost japanese reliability without the cost, and more features.

One last thing. I put a new exhaust for a deeper sound. Sounds nice and throaty and I believe it improved mileage a little bit. Maybe a couple more horsepower? Anyways, I recommend that option.
