Sitting in my garage, doesn't run with a cracked head. Started smoking.
Dash warped.
Alternator.
Driver's side window knob kept falling off - really irritating.
Went through lots of brake pads.
3 sets of tires.
Driver's seatbelt didn't work.
Didn't need a key to start.
Lots more was wrong, just can't remember it all. But nothing really costed much.
This was a very reliable car considering it was running with only 3 spark plugs for about 20,000k. The oil wasn't regularly changed or added and it was just fryed to the engine.
I got this car after my Mom got a new car and it was handed down to me. Went to highschool then college (60k+ a day) for about a year and a half.
This car has been through hell and back. Really has taken a beating. I really didn't take very good care of it, but it took pretty good care of me. Until of course it stopped running. I think it could have still driven a while with the cracked head, but it smoked just way to much. I even got a ticket for it once.
With regular maintenance this car could have probably outlasted any Honda.
Not very much money was put into this car, but it's probably going to be sold to a junk yard in the next few months RIP.
The 3.1L V6 is amazing and reliable.
The first guy stated the car very well...
Sitting in garage with a cracked head.
I know the feeling!!!
Good car... Got lucky... 117,000 miles when purchased for $600.00, car looked good after it had been washed, but before a bath it was almost completely black, you could hardly tell that there was white paint under all the dirt, which had acumulated over a year or so of it sitting under a pecan tree..
Had steel wheels, just wasn't very sporty looking, looked like a Granny's car. So I put the factory sport wheels on it, then tinted the windows to 5% "dark". Put a new paint job on it, and now I love it. I have driven the car everywhere, back and forth from Memphis Tn to Enid OK, which is about 550 miles one way, so I usually put about 2,000 miles on it round trip. With all the driving I have done, and that went on for almost a year, I am up to 150,000 miles.
Never really had any problems, it started smoking about 7 months ago, nothing to really complain about cause you can't see while driving, so people tell me, but it's due for a rebuild in about a week or so. My 91'Pontiac Sunbird has been the most reliable car I have ever owned, and I will do anything to keep it that way.
Don't trash Sunbirds, with any car it depends on how the previous owner took care of the car.. And if it was taken care of well then you probably won't have too many problems with it.
I replaced the whole front end and shocks all around, all the highway driving kinda trashed out the front end, especially in Ark., the highways are just hell over there, for a little car that doesn't ride that well anyways.
I don't like how the car doesn't have cruise control, but I can add that with junkyard parts.
I don't like the little 2.0 engine Pontiac used, somtimes it runs like a CHAMP and most others it runs pretty good. Excellent gas mileage, just can't believe the mpg I get..
The door is rusting out on the drivers side, on the bottom, but that's due to the drains being clogged up.
Brakes, yes, I go through a lot of those, seeing how I drive of course... Tires a couple or few sets a year, due to my driving, the little car is pretty peppy... For a 2.0 Japanese motor..
Well, anyways, I like my Pontiac..
I bought mine from a guy at work for 400 bucks to save from driving my Huge Honkin' Dodge Ram truck (gas mileage sucks). Anyway, this car has saved me a fortune in gas! Runs like a real champster! Only problems are, the trunk leaks a little and the paint is fading on the hood, and oh, the girls won't give ma look in it either (not sure if it's the car though) - thinking about giving her a $100.00 paint job and I'll be good to go! All I can say is, if you find a deal like I did... go for it!

My older sister purchased a 91 Pontiac sun bird convertible, the only major problem is the top. Somebody tryed to break in and just cut the top open, my dad had to sew it back together and eventually sew a large peice of vinyl on the top. The car has been nicknamed frankenstein because my sister has totalled it 3 times and each time it has been resurrected. For 300 dollars it wasn't a bad buy for my first car. She even threw in a new top making the car its self only about 100 dollars. the car runs, passed emissions. And has no significant problems other than I havn't redone the top or that the stereo is broken and I need to install my new JVC cd player.
The cars a good buy and lasts.
