1995 Pontiac Sunfire 4DR LX from North America - Comments

"If you like to take risks, purchase a '95 Sunfire"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

I had this car for about 40,000KM's, I paid onlY $2,000 for it at 204K KM so I THOUGHT I was getting a good deal. This car may have some reliability after you change all the major parts, as I drove it to Newfoundland from Windsor, and back and only had to pay for a new rad before I left Ontario and a new hose that connects the rad to the engine (which leaked in newfoundland). I don't know if this was my own fault, but this car was a solid starter in the winter, and never had transmission troubles. But the negativities underminded the postiive aspects of this vehicle and I would never purchase a Pontiac Sunfire again. This vehicle scares the living spirits from me as I question which part of the car will blow up next.

- Head Gasket blew on me just like everyone else on this board. This caused the car to overheat in the summer when it was left sitting idle and caused the heater not to work at all and not warm up at all in the winter.

- Alternator blew on me driving 50K during rush hour.

- Radiator blew up on me which sparked a fire while I was on the 401 near Pickering, I believe this may have destroyed the head gasket, but I'm not sure.

- Front axcel caved in on me, about the same time as the wheel bearing which burnt my tire to a pulp. This was the last patience I had for this Sunfire, I called the Local Wreckers and gave them the car for free. Probably a good deal for him since I purchased a new battery, rad, alternator, and tires not so long ago!

- Seats are made out of cheap material.

General comments?

I won't purchase a new Pontiac, a used Pontiac, as Pontiac comes with baggage which is heavy. I will soon test the Japanese makes, I see these vehicles are much better reviewed and less troubles occur. I find this car excellent for within city travel, but do not take this car on journies, as trouble will go wrong travelling at higher speeds.

People should not put down a car that they bought for 2 grand that had 200 plus thousand kilos on it and expect to drive it with no problems. first off you can never tell what kind of people owned it previously to you and how they maintained it and drove it. you have to expect to do repairs with a vehicle that age and with that many k's on it, remember you paid 2000 dollars not 20000 dollars for a new one. all I'm saying is with a car, maintanance is the key thing! and if you don't keep up on it, things unexpectedly will happen, especially with a car of that age.

I got a 1995 sunfire about a year ago for $1500. It has about 92000 miles on it. I have put about a thousand more on it and have no troubles except for a small rust spot and the A/C went out before I got it. The people that had it before did regular maintenance checks on it so it is in good shape. First off don't complain about the head gasket, Pontiac recalled it and mine has already been fixed. Secondly everybody complains about how bad this car is, its really not that bad. Every car is going to have trouble you just have to take some initiative and take it to the mechanic once in a while. I think this a very good sporty car that will keep running strong for 20 thousand miles more at least.

I had a 95 sunfire I bought in 95. I put almost 150,000 miles on it. The only thing I had to replace the the clutch at 110,000 miles. I had no complaints about it. That sunfire you picked up was very old with a lot of miles on it. I would never buy a car with that many miles on it unless I knew who took care of it or was able to find the paper work trail with some kind of maintenance record on it. That was not Pontiac's fault! What do you expect.

I have a 95 sunfire gt and when we got it there were overheating problems, which are now fixed. the pressurized over flow container was to blame. But now it just won't start sometimes. We have brought it to the mechanics twice and they can't figure out what's wrong.

Wow, your experience sounds almost like a copy of mine!

I happen to be from Ontario too, the car died on a camping trip south of Peterborough and I was so frustrated with the car that I had it towed away for $25!

Pontiac Sunfires are cheap domestic cars. You get what you pay for. Some will last quite a while with very few problems, most will not. Are you willing to take the risk?

Buy a Mitsubishi. Best warranty in the world.

I like the Sunfire even with its little problems. Got it for $400 with 150000 miles on it and it's running fine.

"Buy a Mitsubishi. Best warranty in the world."

You'll need it. Mitsubishi stinks! Buy a Honda or a Toyota. If you want a 100,000 mile warranty standard then buy a Hyundai.
