When I got the car it ran good for about 2 months than the darn thing kept stalling in the middle of traffic and on the highway! it also kept over heating. I took it to the shop and they said my catalistic converter went, my fuel pump and my sensor. Now my car only starts once in a while! it will turn over and that's it. when it does start, my engine light is on and the other lights keep flashing. My fan in the motor is also not working. When I put a new fuse in it just blows. it also is has a burning plastic smell. My speedometer was blinking on and off. Now it is staying off. My sunfire is always overheating. I can't get a break! My seats are also starting to wear out and the springs are poking out of the back. The plastic covers on everything are coming off. My trunk latch broke. The lights for the sunfire sign in the back burnt out and I can't find the problem. My spark control mogulator is pooched. There are also other problems too numerous to mention. It is a nice looking car and it is good on gas, but with all the problems I am having with it I can barely afford to keep up the payments. I would not reccomend anyone to get a sunfire after all the problems I encountered.
Sorry to hear about your troubles. I remember reading about troubles with this particular model. How it wasn't roadworthy, nor was it safe... supposedly it fared badly in collision testing. Hey, don't feel bad... I drive a 2000 Ford Focus. Flying deathtraps unite!
Hey man it sounds liek you water pump could be bad due to the over heating problem. I know sunfires were know for having water pumps go.
If your cat converter is gone, you have to have it as well as your muffler replaced. I will tell you why as I just went through it. All the "honey comb" of the converter went into your muffler and is obstructing the flow of exhaust, thus putting the pressure as well as heat back into your engine, this was stalling, overheating as well as damaging my engine. It is a common problem with a lot of cars from what I understand, but no one figures it out until way to late, ie warping your head, water pumps etc etc. Check it out... I can almost bet your obd2 reader says p0420, meaning cat convert is toast.
