1983 Porsche 911 SC from North America - Comments

"Outstanding, this car is an engineering work of art"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Have not had it long enough for anything to go wrong, replaced a cracked windshield and had one tune-up.

The leather dash is cracked and the leather seats have split.

General comments?

The body is the single most recognizable automotive shape in history and despite being 23 years old people still stop and look. My car has the rear deck spoiler ("whaletail") and 16" blackened Fuchs wheels, and I've had several 996 and Boxster owners say that they prefer the look of the 80ies 911s over what they drive.

I chose a 911 "Super Carrera" because of it's relatively simple fuel injection and mechanicals and the "bulletproof" 3.0 litre the 911SC is famous for. I selected this one because of it's fully documented history and it's options package that included leather, black Fuchs and spoilers.

I whole-heartedly agree with this reviewer. My 911sc is still going strong at 321,000. Major engine repairs at 160,000. Original transmission is idiosyncratic, but that's part of the mystique. Excellent mechanic nearby is a great convenience. Electrical system re-wired after fire caused by the overheating of the front a/c condenser fan. A rock had somehow jammed the fan blades. Car is driven rain or shine, 24/7, 365. Only other car I've ever considered is an NSX, but can't bear the thought of parting with the Porsche.
