"The best roadster value available"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Not a thing, just routine maintenance.

General comments?

This is the 5th 914 I have owned, the 4th with a 4cyl motor. I have found them to be reliable, quick cars with a huge "fun factor" at autocross meets they routinely beat most of the competition including 911s and variants. They get good gas mileage and except for hard to locate or parts that are no longer available are relatively inexpensive to fix and maintain. The cabin is spaceous for a roadster and with two trunks you can carry a suprising amount of stuff.

You "routinely" beat 911s with your VW/Porsche?

Why do I find this hard to believe?

That's because the autocross is more of a handling track vs. a speed track. and even Porsche says that the 914 handling is more responsive around corners than the 911. same for the boxster. that's why a lot of people still want to get 914's to this day.

It's true, the 14's beat the 11's hands down. With a 6 banger and a wing they leave the Ferrarri, Cobra's, and Vettes in the dust on the track.

My 914 kept up to a porsche 911 turbo almost nose to nose up to 110MPH where the turbo just kept climbing and I became a spec in its rear view windows.

Porsches have magical engines and the weight to HP ratio on a stock 2 Liter is the same as the Ferrarri Dino.

Magical engines these Porsches, and to top it off, they have VW beetle reliability with this small Ferrari performance punch. Understandibly a 6 banger in one of these things will eat anything, and I even heard of people making them street rockets with aluminum V8's, now that is outright nuts too fast.

But ya, they eat 911's to the degree I have indicated above. And second best cornering car in the world to the Lamoughini Euroco, it's a go kart on steroids.

Hard to find a good one though, and tougher as time goes on as the battery tray and longitudinals tend to rust after 30 some odd years. If you do, treasure it like no tomorrow as there are no substututes, even in the Porsche lines.
