1988 Porsche 928 S4 review from North America
"Best value Super Car for the money"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The car had been sitting unmaintained for a couple of years before I bought it. To return it to good operating condition I had to replace/service:
LH computer.
O-rings in the air conditioning.
Steering rack.
Wheels aligned.
General comments?
Exceptional GT performance.
At 0 - 60 MPH in about 6.2 not the fastest supercar off the line, but incredible power from 80 MPH to top speed of around 160 MPH.
The shark is as comfortable on the highway at 140 MPH as it is at 70 MPH. Very responsive with excellent feedback without ever making you feel like your losing control.
The V8 comes alive at 4000 RPM giving full use of the available 317 lb/ft torque.
The build quality is excellent and the car can run all day at high speeds without any complaint.
Stock suspension is very good for daily driving and easily tuned for specific uses.
The interior is remarkably comfortable for long drives and has all the creature comforts you would expect to find in a luxury sedan.
For proper maintenance it is critical to have a knowledgeable and experienced 928 mechanic available to you and to keep up to date on proper maintenance.
There are at least three excellent sources in the USA for parts that are much less expensive than from the dealer.
Very enthusiastic support from 928 owners world wide through www.rennlist.org and www.928OC.org. Owners really support each other with help and advice.
Don't be afraid of higher mileage cars. Most of the body on the 928 is aluminum, so rust is not generally an issue. The engine block is a alloy masterpiece that will hold up for hundreds of thousands of miles.
Unless you have time and money to burn, buy the newest model you can afford in the best condition you can find.
