1994 Porsche 928 GTS from North America - Comments

"Yes"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Timing belt and water pump along with a few hoses at 30K.

Few seals at 20K and 28K.

Nothing else.

General comments?

This is the holy grail of 928's, next to last year of production. I only put 16K miles on it for the entire time I owned the car, but they were VERY FUN miles. I'd track the car 2-3 times a summer.

Aside for the normal maint cost, which tended to be on the high side, noting was needed except tires for the 16K miles I owned the car.

I added a few extras, adjustable suspension, after market exauste and a new fuel pump/reg system. It dyno'd out at about 380 HP and over 400 HP torque.

I LOVED this car. Very reliable and fun to drive.

Just to say thank you for taking the time. Am even more tempted by a GTS now!

After doting over the 928 for 20 years and wanting the GTS since 1992 I finally bought my 1993 GTS in Jan 2005. What a car, incredible looks, speed & still attracts glances wherever I go. Looking forward to traveling to Europe this summer.

Hello

I am on my 2nd year owning a 1994 GTS. What a Car! Bought it with 39k miles, park it all winter, just turned 90k. I can't help myself, not driving it all the time. What a thrill. Tires do wear fast. Local dealer is Expensive. You only live once. See You All at the Shark fest in North Carolina, June-05.

Hello, 928 fan here. I don't own one, and I've only seen one on BBC's Top Gear program. This is, no doubt, a ridiculous question, but I wondered when I first learned of this model whether it had a V8, or some sort of "flat-8?" For all I know, a V-anything may be an insult to a knowledgeable Porsche enthusiast. My only true knowledge of Porsches comes from a friend's '87 944 (American, right-hand driver and all). It was no 911, but the performance from that car (2.5l 4-cyl, I believe) was unmatched by anything with as many cylinders. Yes, I know Subaru Sti and Mitsubishi Evo are faster, but I say to fans of those cars, which are very nice and all, this: Drive a Porsche, just once. I've driven the "bottom of the barrel," so to speak, and was impressed, to say the least. Anyway, back to the 928. With the intoxicating growl from that 944 (imagine! a 4-cyl sounding better than most V8s!), I could only imagine what might be expected of a Porsche with twice that number of cylinders powering it. Thanks in advance for any response (from a Porsche fan, not an idiot, anyway). Perhaps I'll one day make a friend with an owner, and then he probably won't let me drive it. Oh, well.

Oops. I meant left-hand driver. The car is indeed an American model. It's sometimes hard to think and type, as many of my fellow commenters demonstrate through other means.

Regarding the engine configuration question (from some four years ago now, it would seem...) : it is indeed a V8. Originally a 4.5 Litre, it was then upgraded to a 4.7 Litre, a 5.0 Litre, and then, ultimately, a 5.4 Litre.

The 2.5 Litre engine in the 944 you mentioned was effectively one half of the V8 found in the 928. And for what it's worth, having a water-cooled, V8 engine in a Porsche *was* a bit of a tough pill to swallow for some Porsche fanatics when the 928 was introduced in 1977---although to be fair, the 928 was originally intended to kill off the 911, rather than be sold as a concurrent model. Hence the outrage. Once it became clear that the 911 wasn't going anywhere, Porschephiles were suddenly a bit more accepting of the big GT. And I suspect that anyone who thinks of the 928 as being, quote, "not a proper Porsche" has never actually driven one: it takes about three hundred yards and a couple of blips of the throttle to discover that yes, it really is a proper thoroughbred, a proper Porsche.
