1989 Porsche 928 S4 review from North America

"Caution! will induce persistent "permagrin""

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Since I have owned the car nothing has gone wrong. When I purchased the car the previous owner was not able to show proof that he had done the crucial timing belt service-this is a must, as 928 owners know. If you buy a car with spotty service history my advice is better safe than sorry, change the belts as soon as possible. This service can be tackled by most competent home mechanics. The do-it-yourselfer will save a bundle otherwise spend the money getting the belts changed; a busted timing belt can cause severe (costly $$$$$) engine damage. This service requires the front of the engine to be taken off, so while all the guts were out I replaced the pullies, water pump, thermostat, rebuilt the tensioner, flushed the radiator and changed the power steering pump. Since the service is not inexpensive you might as well do as much as you can while the front of the engine is accessible. If you have an automatic transmission have your mechanic check the drive shaft. This is a simple thing to do and can save you a packet! Google 928 flex plate and you will find a lot of useful information on the topic.

In essence, over time the drive shaft can migrate towards the engine placing enough pressure on the crankshaft causing a failure in the engine thrust bearing allowing the crankshaft to push and grind into the engine block. If this happens, you will be spending serious bucks!!! The solution is simple have your mechanic check this, it takes about an hour to check and adjust.

General comments?

I have owned 4 Porsches (911 to 928). I currently have 3 Porsches, an 89 928 S4, 91 944 S2 and a 99 Boxster. They are all a blast to drive. However, the 928 is by far the best all around Porsche I have. I am amazed at this 17-year-old car’s performance, comfort and its ability to induce “perma grin” while you drive. Unlike my 911, it is an easy car to drive, no hidden quirks. If you are looking to buy one there are multiple web sites with useful information on what to look for. Do your research and buy the best example you can afford. You will not be disappointed.
