1997 Proton Persona GLSi review from UK and Ireland

Both electric windows played up and tipped when closing at 30000.

Had to have both keys replaced at 40000.

Rear suspension bushes needed replacing at 40000

Engine

had regular services etc then just before the last service the check engine light came on twice. had it checked out, but was told it was a bit of dirt in the petrol. Thought nothing of it and continued to use it.

About 6 months later the check engine light started to come on again every time it came on it stalled. took it to proton engineer who tsted it and said, can't find anything wrong with it. I tried to make the fault reappear, but it won. take the car back and it behaves for about a month, then, you guessed it check engine light comes on again intermittently. Proton engineer could not find fault yet again as it worked fine when with him, he contacted proton and they said it could be a seal in excelorater mechanism, but you cannot buy the seal you ave to buy the whole thing £470. Retuns home with car and yes, a short while later check engine came on again this time less intermittently, The car started to wobble from side to side between 1500 and 1800 revs, I decide to change spark plus and find that cyleders 1,2 and 3 plug are nearly burnt out and plug four is as good as new just a bit sooty. ask about and after some research find that there is no compression in cyender 4 and this that been going on for some time intermitently, engineers comment s, it could be piston rings, head gasget computer, how much is it going to cost we ask and nearly have heart attach.

Good family car bought it and all went well. until started to play up.

enjoyed long trips between 50 and 150 miles also enjoyed short runs too.

Cannot put too much weight in it as exhaust catches now and again on speed bumps when loaded, but in the first 18 moths of ownership we could not have wished for a better car. cabin OK Seats comfortable and readouts good.
