1992 Proton Saga SE 1.5 petrol from UK and Ireland
Summary:
Not that bad
Faults:
Distributor, head gasket, oil leaks, gearbox whined (but never failed) plus consumables.
General Comments:
Proton Saga, 1992 in beige. Yes, an old pensioners car. This car had a poor image in the UK, but the one I inherited (from grand-parents of course) did me well for a good few years.
Actually OK to drive, comfortable and spacious enough. 1.5 engine was nippy, but not that good on fuel, struggled for 33 mpg.
Dull looks - very 1980's boxy looking inside and out.
But it got me through my student years reliably, and I didn't even take particularly good care of it. It was one of my first cars after my disastrous 1987 Ford Fiesta died almost immediately after passing my test. But I paid £200 for that car, and I got the Proton for nothing. When the head gasket blew I figured it was not worth fixing and scrapped it in 2005, it was a rare car even by then and I cannot recall the last time I saw one on the UK roads!
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Don't Know

I am the original reviewer, and have encountered some electrical problems since I purchased the car, such as central locking window jamming down and the other electric one falling down.
I seem to get less mileage per tank each week; the best I have had is 482km on a tank. My old Honda got 55 km plus.
The proton has given some starting issues every now and then. Great fun when I was stopped at a police breath test and failed to start again. Despite taking my car to my mechanic, they cannot find out why it is doing this. Have just had a full service and tune up, so hopefully this may fix it.
I have now accomplished 48200km in the Proton and am not enjoying it. If this vehicle continues to give problems, I will sell it and buy another Honda, cos they are brilliant.
