1994 Renault 19 16v 1.8 16v from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A high performance head turner

Faults:

Nothing major, just had it serviced, it's OK, needs a few little things done.

General Comments:

I love it. It does have to be pushed to get the best out of it, but it will do most things on the road within its category.

Looks are excellent, but watch those bills. Needs looking after or things will go wrong.

1994 Renault 19 16v 1.8 16v twin cam petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Now a cheap Hot Hatch! - A must have

Faults:

Gearbox failure at 100,000 miles - very expensive.

The 16v eats wheel bearings and front tyres and it's not due to my driving!

General Comments:

An excellent compact, highish performance car!

Years of trouble free service but at 126,000 miles, things are starting to fail.

1994 Renault 19 16v 1.8 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Make sure you get a good warranty!!!!

Faults:

Am now on my third gearbox this year and second clutch, hand brake shot to bits, needs a new one desparately.

Drive shaft was close to falling from the car after purchase, head gasket is looking worrying.

Other minor things such as new battery, pads and discs.

Bodywork suffering slightly, stonechips need attention as bonnet is now looking pebble dashed.

General Comments:

Overall a fun car to drive, on the right day. Cooler temperatures means slightly better performance.

Handling is superb, sticks to the road well, and fun to play with. It won't win any prizes as the fastest car out there, but it also won't win any as the slowest.

1994 Renault 19 16v Chamade 1.8 16v from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Practical hot-hatch (or saloon), but only really appreciated if your name's Kevin

Faults:

Probably just lots of teething trouble.... Replaced battery & repaired alternator as voltage regulator gone. Trip computer LCD display is failing, but they all do that. Later needed new coolant sensor as cold starting problems developed. Had terrible grief with varying stiff/loose clutch feel, but a new cable & ratchet assembly finally fixed it. Handbrake required adjustment & rear brakes beginning to squeal... will need new pads & discs soon.

General Comments:

Performance car with space for 4 people & luggage, but you need to drive it hard as all the torque is at the top-end. Good handling & feel, PAS weights up well. Looks nice in my opinion with spoiler & skirt. But comfort, luxuries & safety are sparse, I wish I'd got a phase 3 model. Driving position is typical for LHD conversion, but bucket seats are nice. Insurance costly but compares with VW GTi 16v etc. What's really put me off is the high cost of Renault parts and that everything is so complex - therefore time-consuming & expensive to fix.

1994 Renault 19 16v 1.8i petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Only parts replaced to date have been servicable items i.e. brake discs pads. Oh and brake hoses.

The LCD screen on the fuel/trip computer is starting to deteriorate.

General Comments:

Nice and nippy at a bargain price, especially when you consider what is being asked for more twitchy Clio's.

Shame about the group 16 insurance!

K&N air element with a Magnex exhaust works really well when set up on a rolling road.

The Renault 19 16v is Group 15 Insurance.

1994 Renault 19 RT 1.7 efi petrol from Australia and New Zealand

Faults:

The gas leaked out of the airconditioning - regasing cost $180.00AU!

Front foglamps seem to mysteriously eat globes - 2 sets in 12 months.

General Comments:

Very comfortable car, offering very good performance (I went from a Holden Barina (Opel/Vauxhaul Corsa) to this car) I bought it for $AU14,000 - very cheap for a car with power windows, air con, sunroof, remote locking, etc - it had only done 30,000 km in 3 years since new. However, with Renault no longer represented in Australia, the dealer has said "no more" to servicing, it could become problematical. However, Renaults are rare on Aussie roads, so even though it's a 4 year old car, it still turns heads.

I would recommend it, but even though Renault are back in Australia with a huge lineup of cars the 19 is still having problems with poor resale value...

A convertible might be an interesting site in OZ..

1994 Renault 19 16 Valve 1.8 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Head gasket has gone, just as well that it was under warranty. Terrible to work on - one and a half days just to strip the thing and parts are very expensive. Seems to be OK now but I'll keep you all posted.

1994 Renault 19 Biarritz 1.4 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Electrical contact to the flywheel died at only 15,000 miles but nothing else.

General Comments:

Very comfortable, pretty reliable and fairly cheap family transport. Very much a plain Jane but lots of good qualities.
