Nothing yet... but I've not had it long enough to give a fair comment on this.
This is a really nice car. It's comfortable, has a good range of standard features and is much, much faster than I thought a 1.4 litre engine could be.
However, there is either something wrong with the fuel gauge or it drinks petrol with no consideration of the impending fossil fuel crisis - infact, it might just cause it!
In fairness, the poor fuel consumption (around 35mpg urban) is partially my fault is it is just so fun to drive and the temptation to put your foot to the floor and surprise the GTi drivers is just too much for me.
The manufacturer's 0 - 60 time is listed as 10.5 seconds but I've timed it at 8.2 seconds. Okay, it's not a Ferrari, but it's pretty damned good for a sub ten grand car and quicker than a Saxo VTR/1.6 Puma/XR3i (I think) /Corsa SRi and so on without the higher insurance premiums.
However, speed isn't everything (or so I've been told) and the electric windows, air conditioning, remote central locking, good looks (in my opinion) add to the car to make it a great little package.
If you are thinking of buying a 1.4 16v Clio, I'd urge you to haggle with the dealer. They can shift the 1.2 Clios to people who want cheap insurance and electric windows and they can flog the 2.0 16v sport models to people who can afford the insurance, but the 1.4 is stuck in the middle. I was totally prepared to walk away when negotiating for the car, they realised this and I got the price down from £7000 to £6300 including tax and insurance.
I am hoping to buy a Clio (new shape) very soon and find it very useful to hear the views of owners, both current and previous. I too want a 1.4 16v and find the info about dealers not shifting the cars so easy useful. I may even consider the new diesel because it is getting such rave reviews.
Go for it...! I'm a couple of thousand miles on from writing that review and I still love it. Oh yes, I put some nice looking alloy wheels on it and it grips like fury around country lanes. Fantastic!
Your name Bob by any chance?
I am looking at the 1.4 16v 2002 model, thanks for the review.

Yes 10/10 for Renault for making the Clio an even more inviting car, it just looks so good, with great driveability to boot, I only have driven a courtesy car and I was well impressed, I am hoping to get a clio next year
But check before buying one if it does not have the easy to stall gremlin, my courtesy car did... it has something to do with the engine management!! it also did not help that the clutch pedal was not in line with the other pedals.
We have a Renault Scenic which is a great car, we have the 1.6 and it certainly shifts, it has everything, it`s very practical for a medium sized car, the interior is huge. interior.
A 1.4 litre 16 valve engine with a 0-60 of 8.2 seconds,
seems like a slight over estimation if you ask me.
I have a 106 GTI which would roast a 1400 Clio of the lights,
yet my performance figures are given as 0-60 in 8.7 seconds,
granted; the manufacturers are sometimes a little conservative with these figures. But I don't reckon they could lose 2 seconds. Unless mine does it in 6.7 that is. In which case I can stop saving for that Porsche Boxster!!LOL.
Hi. I bought a Clio Alize (V reg) last year from a dealer, but am now sometimes having problems getting it in gear. It just seems to stick, taking several attempts before going in. Anyone know what the problem is? Mileage is 35k.

Yeah the Alize 1.4 16v is a very nippy car for what it is, but my driveshaft is gone and I've only had it 4 1 month! not very reasuring and its not the way I drive it as it is an easy drivin car and can fair hammer those VTR's (haha).
Hope 2 get it back next week and then let the modifiying begin!
Hi I've recently purchased an X reg 1.4 Clio Alize. is it just me or does it drink petrol? other than that I find the car nippy and reliable, another problem is the demister any hints as to a fix as the A. C seems to drink ther fuel.
Thanks Joe.
Hi
I bought 2000 clio automatic recently or my wife.3 days back a gramophone shaped light with letter auto below it came on on instrument panel (in the big dial with x100)
we have no handbook and have no idea what it means. Engine seems to be straining when it came on.
Please let me know what could be the problem and how to correct it?
