2002 Renault Clio Expression+ review from UK and Ireland

"Good value and well equipped, but driving position and palsticky cabin let it down"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Nothing so far!

General comments?

The Clio Mark 3 has fabulous looks - a car envied by many people, and has nice additions like the near vertical rear window and large 'diamond' badging doubling as a boot-handle. 'Alloy effect'wheel trims are standard on all cars that don't have real Alloys.

It's a good value car too, cheaper than a Volkswagen Polo or Skoda Fabia, but it is a more expensive option than a Fiat Punto or Vauxhall Corsa. The plus side is that the Clio holds its value well so you can get a good price for it if you sell it.

The steering column only adjusts for height, so finding a comfortable pedal v steering wheel position is near impossible for anyone over 5'10"!

The interior is quite stylish, but save for the top of the dashboard which is in a Volkswagen-esue soft-touch material, it's all rather hard and shiny, especially in beige colour - definitely opt for black interiors.

Equipment is very good, with the Expression+ models getting Air-con; sunroof; powered steering; ABS; front driver, passenger and side airbags and we managed to get a free-of-charge 6-disc CD player from Renault.

The 1.2 engine is the smalles Renault offer, but it's surprisingly quick, though it might be best to have a bigger engine for motorway driving.

Rear space is appalling - a problem the new Clio in 2004 will need to address, and rear headroom is limited due to the car's curvy styling.
