1995 Renault Clio Williams 2 review from UK and Ireland
"A speeding roller coaster of a ride"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Clutch or gearbox have recently gone (71,000m) due to hitting the limiter in 4th and crunching in 5th. Not sure on price yet though been quoted between £850 and £1700 to replace the gearbox!
Ignition relay wire to starter motor corroded meaning starting problems- easy to relay the wire yourself though.
General comments?
Outstanding! I'm 20yrs old and I've wanted this car ever since I saw it parked on my neighbors drive. It's bite sure does live up to it's bark and it never ceases to amaze me.
Blisteringly fast acceleration in every gear and really does kick in at around 5000 revs in 5th like a true 16 valver to leave others for dust- even the pug 205 1.9 Mi16!
Interior is beautiful from the blue carpets and the bucket seats right up to the tell-tale blue dials.
The seats are comfortable yet rigid and keep the driver planted firmly in-place when the wide tyres and stiffened sports suspension are keeping the car glued to the road through sharp, hi-paced corners without even breaking a sweat.
The exterior is magnificently crafted and everything about the look of this car draws attention, the deep blue/purple flip paintwork is mesmerizing, the flared front and rear arches and the bonnet bulge and scoop really do look menacing in the rear view mirror of the car infront and the bright gold 15" alloy wheels attract stares of awe and give the car a distinct rally flare that boy-racers crave and the elderly lament!
It drives well in all conditions, from low speed urban driving to tricky high speed rural pursuits- this car really comes into its own through country lanes and can easily out pace high power Japanese turbo chariots thanks to its quick reflexes and sharp handling.
It can be noisy during long haul motorway driving, but that just reminds you of the power at your feet.
The brakes are fairly delicate and although are adequate, will need to be uprated if the car is going to be pushed to the limits.
The tank sized engine has been shoe-horned into a bay the size of a lemon and this makes servicing and repair tricky and this is definitely reflected in the labour charges at the workshop. However, parts are fairly easy to come by and there are plenty of companies out there offering uprated performance products to replace the dull OE pieces.
Like most cars it will guzzle petrol when pushed hard, but I've seen it run about 45mpg through light footed urban driving, but this can drop to around 17/18mpg.
All in all a highly desirable limited edition hot hatch that is disputably the king of the country lanes and should be a very high contender on anybodies choice of car. As long as the car is serviced regularly with the oil being changed every 3,000 miles between services as well, it can go on and on and there will be no limit to the fun you can have with a Williams tuned Clio sports car.
