Punto HGT is quicker in a straight line than the clio 182,
I've wasted these cars on the drag strip and at the lights numerous amounts of times!
I'm inclined to agree with the HGT comment.
I own a "SAXO VTS" and have raced "so called" faster cars on the strip & also at the lights etc... I also have left civic type rs, clio 172s & 182s etc for dead... I have as well come up against a few PUNTO HGTs!! and believe me "THEY FLY", very hard to beat, I've been beaten by them on numerous occasions, as I've found out the standard power for Hgts are nearer 149bhp for the earlier Hgts 1999-2001 models that is, with plenty of torque from Factory spec, quite a bit more than the VTS.
Saxo VTS & Punto HGTs ETC... are MORE than capable of showing "so called" faster cars what straight line speed is really about!
What Am I hearing here? A Saxo VTS and a Punto HGT faster than a Civic Type R or a Clio 182. I don't think so lads.
I'm not saying the Saxo and Punto are slow cars, but a Clio 182 is in a different class. In a straight line the Clio 182 would destroy any unmodded Punto or Saxo. Period.

I went from a SAXO VTS to a Clio 182 and from ownership experience the 182 is no just a "so called" faster car, it IS a faster car.
I have a lot of respect for the Vts and loved mine to bits and would never underestimate one, but the 182 is on the next level. As for the Punto, then i`m sorry, but again its never as quick as a 182 in any drag, standard v standard, unless the 182 is the worlds worst driver.
We are talking cars here of a similar size and weight, but with quite a difference in power. The 182 has a considerable amount of power on hand over both these cars and it doesn`t take a Rocket scientist to work out that despite being quick little cars in their own right, they are both no match for the Clio.
Both the Punto and Vts are tasty little cars and only a fool would underestimate them, but fact guys, the Clio is quicker than both, despite whatever claims you want to come out with... end of story.
Try taking on a 911 gts rs!!
Lets be fair here!
No one reckons the clio 182 could take on a 911 in any way!
But the saxo vts no problem!!! punto hgt no problem (Hgt tougher car in a straight line than a vts) as I have come up against both, on a few occasions and I own a clio 182.
I do find the HGT to be a quicker car than the VTS in a straight line, but not like the 182!

The Focus also comes in an outrageous orange colour.
Also the new Leon Cupra will be available soon - but who'd want it with Seat dealers reputations?
Try a second hand Honda Integra Type R (DC 2 or new DC 5). Both great fun, with the engines and Honda gearboxes, and the handling you're looking for without looking like an MPV, and because there's no turbo, they can still hit 34mpg on a run and average 28mpg in town driving.
Civic type R's do seem common, but focus RS's, EVO's, and scoobys are not common, something like a 1.6 focus is common, or 2.0 mondeo or 1.8 astra. You can bank on seeing a few of those on your way to work. Seeing one of the others gets your attention if your into cars, I wouldn't call that common.

'scoobys are not common'
Are you having a giraffe. I have round trip of 80 miles each day, and must see between 5-10, hardly rare!
Yea and how many ford focus's do you see, 100-200? Just trying to give you some perspective.
I raced a Clio 182 in my dc5 teg, and I can honestly say that it couldn't keep up. The Integra would hit 60 in just under 6 seconds.

To the last comment; no, an Integra would not hit 60 in less than 6 seconds. Its 0-60 time is 6.5, which is still faster than a 182.
I don't care what magazines say; a 182 Cup will do 0-60 in 6.9, which is good for what it is, but all the bigger hatches are faster.
All I have read on this thread are 182 owners saying it's faster than a Type R. Where are all the Type R owners fighting back? It's a far superior car to the french Renault in every single way.
And as for that comment saying he couldn't get it to go faster than 7.7 to 60 heres some advise for you, stop setting off in 4th gear; I used to own a Type R and beat many Clios with almost laughable ease.
And I don't know why you Clio owners are saying you can leave a Focus RS down a B road. The Focus RS is one of, if not the best FWD drive car of all time. Its front differential is amazing, and this was proved on Top Gear; it was the fastest out off all the hot hatches by a long way.
The Focus RS was beaten around the track by the Civic Type R by about half a second on a 60 second lap. I own the Integra Type R DC2, which does 0-60 in 6.2 seconds, 0.3 quicker than the Civic which does it in 6.5. The DC5 has 22 hp more than the DC2, but weighs 100kg more, so it's 0-60 is pretty much identical to the DC2.
Civic Type R wasn't faster. On the first series of the new Top Gear, the Focus RS was an incredible 4 seconds faster round the track than the Civic Type R, and also as pointed out above, the Focus RS was faster than a Subaru Impreza. The Focus RS is better than the Civic Type R, and they are both better than the 182.
