Terrible sunroof rattle
Very poor after sales service
When I first purchased the car I was quite happy with it. It looked good and on paper was reasonably quick for its insurance group.
The car drives well, it is a bit noisy but this is expected from a car of this size. The handling is impressive and as it has electric power steering the response from the wheel is good. The interior is cheap and feels like a budget car but accomodates well for four to five people on short trips.
Unfortunalty the more I drive the car the more I realise how poor the car really is.
The build quality is just terrible and the service from both renault UK and the dealership after sale is disgusting. I would strongly advise no one to purchase a clio from my experience with it.
I owned the car for less than a year and have had to endure a loud rattle from the sunroof. After more than five attempt at the dealers to solve the problem i have been told that it is a universal fault with the car and that nothing can be done. If anyone knew of this fault before the purchase of the car then no clios would be sold.
After making contact with Renault UK I have told that they can do very little and that I am now left with a poor built car.
My advise to others considering purchasing the clio is that they think again and opt for a car that is more realiable and much better built
I too own a clio with a rattle and after several trips back to the dealer and a letter to the managing director of the dealership I now have no rattle! and all it was was the sunroof needed a new handle and the seals to be filled - my advice don't let them fob you off!
I have a Y reg Renault and have taken my car back on three occasions concerning the squeaky sunroof, they have replaced it three times, but I'm sorry to say, it still squeaks! You would have thought that in 3 years Renualt would have sorted out the squeaky sunroof for all the loyal customers that they have.
It's unfortunate you've had problems. I own a Clio Dynamique dci80 and have a minor creak from the electric sunroof and a rattle from the passenger seat. The sunroof is alleviated by opening it and closing it, the front seat by ensuring it is locked home properly. I sometimes wonder if people actually know how to care for their cars; bouncing them up kerbs, bashing them down potholes, smashing the doors closed. Even BMW and Audi's 'give' after a certain amount of mis-treatment.
I'll grant you, the build quality is not as good as it should be, but for the money you pay and amount of car that you get it's more than acceptable. Style and flair well above the Fiesta and Corsa to boot.
If you are still convinced Renaults are rubbish, and that the top German makes must be the only way to go, take a look at the reviews for the VW Polo (as a comparison to the Clio) and you'll soon have some food for thought.
Every car make has its problems, you've just been unlucky. Read some of the 'good' Clio reviews to balance your view. You could jump into a 206, Polo (!) or Corsa next week and get lemons in those. I've had experience of poor Fiestas and Corsa's, still don't think they're bad cars, just not to my taste. I guess it's down to style.

I agree with the last guy! a sun roof rattle is easily fixed and does only need a new handle - these are great little cars which are miles better than the competition. I will buy another one...
My family own 3 Renaults, (2 of them are Clio 2 2003 diesel and the other is a Senic also 2003) When we have had problems such as unable to start, turbo malfunctions etc the dealers service and after sales customer care has been appalling. We live in France.
I had a 1.2 Clio dynamique 2002 and the sunroof on that squeaked. But it's a minor fault and I don't think its fair to slate the car just for that. Clio's are great little cars for the money, they are cooler than the competition and the 1.2 engine is one of the best in its class. In fact I liked mine so much I'm getting another!!

I was so excited when I went to pick up my new Renault Clio 1.4 Dynamique. 2004. Unfortunatley my sunroof started to make funny creaking noises. I have taken it back so many times I have lost count. It has gone through the whole process, but still rattles. The service is not that great at Renault and so I am left with a noisy car.
I certainly will not be buying a Clio ever agin and advise others not too.
I feel I have wasted my money as this is a very irritating noise.
I bought my Renault Clio (54 plate) two weeks ago and I agree that the sunroof is very noisy. It's driving me mad already!
I'm having trouble working out how to change the mileage display so it shows how many miles are left to empty, rather than the total miles driven during one journey. Can anyone shed any light?
I have just purchased a 54 Clio dci80 and the sunroof is driving me crazy. It had a continuous rattle, have tried opening and closing the sunroof even with it open it still rattles, lubricated the seals. The dealership seems unwilling to help.
If anyone has a solution or knows of an understanding dealership (still under warranty) on the south coast please post it on the notice board.

To all those having problems with the rattling sunroof.
I too had this trouble and the dealership just tried to fob me off saying that all clios do it. In the end they changed the whole bracket thing. I was glad this was under warranty as it cost them £400! Well it still rattled so...
I got a small piece of paper, folder it in half again and again until it was the size of a 5p and about as thick as a pound, then opened the sunroof, when I shut the sunroof I shut the piece of paper in the latch handle. This tightened the seal and stopped the rattle!!
