2001 Renault Laguna Privilege Sport Tourer review from UK and Ireland

"The most unreliable car ever made. Choose Japanese or German!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Day two after purchase, the tyre pressure sensor broke.

Rear windscreen wiper motor packed in.

Fuel injection fault. Got the car back in 'limp home mode'.

Just after the warranty ran out, had to have new key card and airflow meter.

At 93000 miles the turbo blew, and it cost £1700 to get a new one, and on collecting the car, the fault was the same even although it had a new turbo on! Apparently the 'technician' forgot to reset the computer!

Above turbo lasted 9000 miles and blew again, and Renault had the gall to make me pay 10% of the cost! On picking up the car up, the fault was still there and this was apparently after a road test, and was due to the EGR valve being stuck.

6 months after the above turbo was fitted, lost power again, car started leaking oil and had to have a new EGR valve fitted. At the same time I got a tyre pressure sensor fault light lit and the rear windscreen wiper motor went again. EGR valve fitted, but they failed to find any oil leak even although Kwik Fit noticed it. Does that tell all you highly paid Renault technicians something?? Give me a good old fashioned car MECHANIC anytime!

Lost power again and had to be recovered from a dangerous motorway. Had a second hand air filter fitted.

Told that I needed a new engine due to oil leaking into the bottom crank shaft! The cost for a reconditioned engine? £2900 plus labour! The car is only worth tuppence (in old money? So what's the point??

Went to Blackpool 9 days after the above repair to try to sell the thing so that I could buy a couple of sticks of rock, but no-one wanted it! They said they would swap it for a donkey ride on the beach!!

Car broke down on the way home and had to be recovered again. The problem was... loss of power again! Apparently according to a MECHANIC this was due to the catalytic converter going! I am still waiting to find out the true cause, but this car has had more 'plastic surgery and new parts than Michael Jackson!!

General comments?

This car is, and always will be a 'lemon'

Stay away from this car. Renault customer service are as much use as a handbrake on a canoe!

If you want a car that you can throw good money after bad on, then I recommend the Renault Laguna Sport Tourer 1.9 dci. It's a real gem!! Not!

If anyone from the Renault technicians department read this, I would suggest you get a proper job and cease working for a company that has no integrity, because they know about these inherent faults (read all of the comments from this site) and have done nothing to help those poor unfortunate owners like myself who have ended up with a car that originally cost me £17500 and is now worth peanuts. All I can say Renault UK is 'see you in the small claims court', and I feel so much better and confident I will win armed with photocopies of the pages from this fantastic website.
