1996 Renault Megane RT review from UK and Ireland
"A drivers car with good road manners and lively engine. Tacky cheap trim lets it down a little"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Exhaust developed a rattle which could not be cured even after several visits to exhaust centers.
When the car has reached running temperature it becomes difficult to shift between first and second gears,
this fault was present when the car was first purchased and has not gone any worse.
Slight noise from power steering pump when cornering, but this is intermittent and not too annoying.
General comments?
Nice car to look at, Renault has produced yet another car that is rust free!.
Very lively 1.6 engine which is good both around town and on a longer run, noisy cabin though at speed, nice to drive and feels responsive to the driver through all the controls.
Very annoying immobilizer which cuts in after the doors are unlocked, not allowing time to load the car of passengers or shopping.
Interior trim is cheap hard Grey plastic and lets the car down a little, but driver and passenger comfort is good with nice supportive seating.
Stereo radio cassette is decent quality and has driver finger tip remote control "nice touch".
Renault have been generous with electric extras on the Megane and all of these on my car have been trouble free.
