2003 Renault Megane Expression review from Malta
"Safe, economical, comfortable drive"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Parcel shelf, replaced under warranty.
Noisy brakes (after cleaning them the noise stopped a bit, but not completely) but it's better now.
Rattle from the dashboard; fixed under warranty, now it stopped.
Radio (poor sound quality and not working properly - it affected the speed related in the steering wheel. The steering and radio speed related was not working prperly). They replaced the radio under warranty, and now everything is good and works properly, and the steering now feels superb.
General comments?
Great looks inside and out.
The 1.5 cdi ltr engine is economical in Malta where I live; it gives me about 50mpg in heavy traffic.
Performance is good and quick, but engine could be more smooth, but it is smooth enough.
Ride is comfortable and stable, and at high speeds the ride settles more.
Refinement could be also better for a car of this class. Bumps and potholes are felt in the cabin, especialy at low speeds. However, the Megane's ride is smooth.
Road holding is safe, but somtimes you need a firm grip on the steering wheel. There is plenty of grip and safety in the Megane's handling. The steering wheel firms up nicely as the speed increases, and becomes light at low speeds.
Space is very good in the front, but mine is the hatchback 5 door, and rear legroom is only avarage, but head room is good in the front and rear.
Seats are comfortable and the driver's seat has plenty of adjustment. The steering wheel is fully adjustable, and there is plenty of storage space - it's like an MPV. Build quality is very good, step inside the rear and you feel that you are in a Mercedes Benz for its stylish interior and high quality materials.
The Megane is is one of the most safest cars in the world, and has plenty of gadgets and high technology.
The only disapointment is that the ride, handling and refinement could be better. It's just that you expect somthing better, because otherwise it's a great car. But if Renault add more sound proofing and revised the steering wheel, Renault would have a car that can compete with Mercedes, Audi, Volvo, and BMW.
Finaly, I wish to say that I am very satisfied by the car, because I love it. It's comfortable and fun to drive. And the service from Renault Malta is outstanding. It's a shame that people are complaining about the Renault dealers in the UK.
In Malta they are very helpful, and when they do something, they do it right.
