Rocker cover gasket.
CV boot.
Secondhand replacement gearbox for £150 as Rover said "Sorry mate, you need a new box, we'll get you one for £2500"!!
Excellent car, better than the usual rusty Rovers, saving for a turbo :-)
I have owned a Rover 220 GTi 16V 3 door hatch for the past 3 years, what a car. I seriously recommend owning one to anyone looking for some serious speed, excellent handling and cheap maintainance.
Only one fault - not exceptionally good on petrol, 25 mpg around town, 32 mpg on the motorway.
Bye bye BMW 320i, bye bye Astra GTE and bye bye Vectra 2000 GSi.
Cheerio.
Andy.
I currently own a 220 Gti, it is a 1994 model.
I find it is a brilliant all round car the interior is stunning the car go's like a bullet and the engine sounds nice. The handling isn't brilliant when you really give it some stick and there are a few annoying squeaks coming from the interior trim it is not brilliant on fuel, but that's not why you buy a Gti is it?
I have in the past had a string of perfomance cars such as the XR3i, RS turbo, 216 gti, golf gti, 16i cabriolet etc etc
but the rover is something special, so prepare yourself for some bad news! If you don't know this already you may be shocked, Rover have a problem with the 'k' series engines they did in 1989 when it was first released and they still do with the brand new vehicles, even the MG.
The head gasket! my uncles 214 sli broke down on the motorway with a blown head gasket, my best mates also went and my gti has gone twice in the eight months I've owned her,
yes I drive it quite hard, but, isn't that what a performance car is for? well it really is a nice car, but I will give you one tip, unless you intend driving her like a milk float or you can afford around £200 a time for it to be fixed stick to the golf!
Phil from Cardiff.
Phil, the 220 GTI doesn't use the K-series engine. It's the M16 unit which isn't particularly known for popping head gaskets. The K-series definitely is, as you say.
I'd say you're pretty unlucky to suffer head gasket failure on a 220GTI.
