1996 Rover - Austin 400 414 from UK and Ireland - Comments

"A very expensive mistake!!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Bought the car new trading in a 7 month old toyota corolla, car arrived with 4 miles (delivery mileage), however garage took a week to register it and mileage was 24 miles on pick up?

Central locking worked intermittently from day one, plastic cubby hole in cabin fell off driving back from dealer.

Car was dirty with cigarette ash everywhere on pick up from garage, the car spent more time in the garage over faulty brake adjustment and central locking failure than on the road.

General comments?

Dealership was terrible, the car was actually fabulous to drive, handled very well, and was good on fuel, however continual problems such as central locking and poor dealership servicing forced me to sell after 6 months at a loss of over £4,500.

I only buy japanese cars now, as I don't have the patience for an unreliable Rover.

I do not agree. My rover has been at its best behaviour since I bought it brand new in 97.

I bought a 420 D at 57,000 miles. Worst £700 I ever spent-- really expensive mistake. After 300 miles in the car, the head gasket blew. The car is a write off. Apparently, the k-series engines are notorious for blowing at 55 - 60,000 miles. Never again.
