1998 Rover - Austin 400 GSDi (saloon) review from UK and Ireland
"Reliable family bargain"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Nothing other than normal (tyres, battery etc.)
General comments?
I've had the car 2 years and it does everything I hoped it would. That is provide comfortable, well equipped, practical, economical transport for minimum investment. Admittedly it's not going to turn any heads, but in dark grey with smart alloys it looks OK.
I regularly get 50mpg, and even 40-45 round town. Can't beleive what good value this car has been, considering you can pick them up for much less than a similarly aged Fiesta. I agree with others who say the 2.0TD is quick in-gear too. Sure it's a little clattery and not up to more modern engines, but I was surprised how quick & torquey it was.
No problems with cabin (it's basically straight out of the Civic). Leather, air-con, 6 CD changer, electric windows/mirrors etc.
I plan to keep it for a long time and make the most of the depreciation that someone else has already paid for.
