Head gasket has just blown again for second time and also twice with previous car a rover 400. rang rover ireland, but they were arrogant and unhelpfull. one comment from them was why did you buy a rover if you knew there was a problem with k -series engine.
Rover should recall all k series engines and modify or the public should be advised not to buy one by motoring
media.
The later K-Series engines are much better though. In 2003 or 2004, Powertrain Ltd. (MG Rover Group's engine and gearbox-making affiliate) modified the K-Series with a larger coolant capacity, significantly reducing the risk of head gasket failure (HGF). Even the earlier engines can be "helped" by simply checking the coolant level weekly and topping it off as needed. The head gaskets fail due to overheating, which is caused by the very small amount of coolant the engines can hold. Also, if you suspect that a head gasket has failed, or that a failure is imminent, shut the engine down immediately. If caught early, a blown head gasket can be repaired for a few hundred GBP, but if an engine with a blown gasket continues to be run, you're looking at a total replacement.
The trouble is that MG Rover dealt with the HGF issue very poorly when the problem first became known, and probably turned off many customers.
