1994 Rover - Austin Metro 1.4LD review from UK and Ireland
"Good car wrecked by poor durability"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Central locking actuators failed several times. Counterweight on gear linkage fell off. All nuts securing exhaust manifold to cylinder head fell off. Marginal cooling at continuous high speeds. Rust on rear wheel arches. Starter motor solenoid failed, and the starter proved very difficult to access for removal.
General comments?
Practical workhorse, ideal for town use, but heavy manual steering and PAS unavailable. Bodyshell assembly quality good, but paintwork quality bad (not poor). Regular suspension repressurisation is required, and this gives an extra cost compared with other vehicles though the hydragas system does give a class-leading ride. Installation of the Peugeot 1.4 litre TU diesel into the Metro bodyshell is quite sound, though it's obvious that little if any attention was paid to fundamental vibration-related problems.
