"A gutsy fighter of an engine that kept going forever, pity about the bodywork"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The body work started to fall apart through rust.

In cold weather the locks froze in the time in took to open the doors and scrap ice from the windows. This would have been fine except it did it twice and locked the doors open so they couldn't be shut again until completely defrosted!

General comments?

Although the car's body work was appalling and there was more rust than metal in the end, the car proved to be a real little fighter.

Even when its engine was hanging half out because one of the brackets that hold it in had rusted through it still managed to get me home. As reliable as my best friend.

I could drive about 200 miles on £10 of petrol which filling the tank full.

It could also shift for a little 1.0 and don't tell the police, but it did over 100 mph comfortable on the motorways.

It will always be a fond memory, my yellow metro with the number plate held on with sticky tape!

I can confirm that the metro was a tough little car: In 1994 I needed an economical car to drive a return journey of 45 miles a day, motorway almost all the way. I really wanted a Fiat Panda, but I saw a 1993 Metro 1000 city (one sun visor!!) with 38000 miles on the clock for £500. So I bought it. My kids christened it 'Old wobbly'. In 3 & half years It only refused to do the journey once - 6:30 on a damp mid winter morning - I forgave it. The doors used to freeze shut - I broke the drivers door handle off one morning trying to free it off. Apart from the usual bits & peices you would expect, all that went wrong was a front wheel bearing, & one track rod end at an mot. I used to call the mot it's 'annual weldathon' as every year a bit more had to be added to it's little underneaths. - My wife would not drive it - not until her Volvo was written off and it was our only car for a while...

One night on my way home from work we had a massive snow storm. the motorway was chock a block so I decided to leave it and go 'cross country' The way Old wobbly handled such absolute horrific conditions and got me home safely still almost brings a lump into my throat!!

After the 3 & half years my job moved and I got a company car. I sold Old wobbly for £350 and was sorry to see him go.

The Metro was more of a man than the Panda could ever have been.
