Actually this is multi-review to advise of general Montego woe:
1990 G reg GTI, racing green: blown head gasket, rotten sills (at only 4 years old), rotten wheel arches, loose bumper, broken radio, leaking PAS, 2 broken clutch cables, leaking sunroof, sunroof handle snapped, door handle fell off, electric windows broken
1989 F reg GTI: broken sunroof, leaking sunroof, door handle fallen off, rotten wheel arches, 2 split driveshaft gaiters on same wheel within a year, PAS leaking
1989 F reg 1.6L: blown head gasket
1988 E reg MG: engine siezed up, trim broken and stained, leaking sun roof, leaking PAS, broken door etc.etc.etc.
For godsake do not buy one of these cars. Actually you would be lucky as they are mostly on the heap now anyway except the odd countryman.
The turbo version is just crazy. I mean you could put a 2.0 turbo engine on a pram if you want to, but you wouldn't want to drive it.
Front end is not too bad, but what were they thinking with the back?? - its just square like a box, sits way too high off the road. Looks like they just couldnt be bothered with the ass end of it.
Absolute complete disaster of a car. Like a fool after the first one seized up, I thought the next one would be okay. After 4 I gave up. They drive okay when they work, but they don't work very often.
17 year old car. What else do you expect!
I had a new 2.0L Efi and it was faultless for 80,000 miles of my ownership.
