Nothing has really gone wrong thus far though I did purchase it for $300 knowing it needed power steering work (didn't figure out till a bit later that it was a rotted steel line directly on the steering rack),brakes,
a headliner, alternator (or so I thought), and a trannie rebuild.
After only a few hundred miles, I am hooked on the classic Saab. It did have a few mechanical needs when I bought it (trannie rebuild is only costing $500 from a good local guy so look around for side jobbers) but since all have been fixed it runs great for an old car.
It does rattle a bit on bumpy roads, hell it's 18 years old, but it gets great gas mileage, handles like a tank in the snow, and turns lots of heads on the road. If anything it's fun car to just creep around the city in while looking for something to do.
In addition to the above this old girl has serious character, a mind of its own, but she handles great on the highway and you rarely have to downshift once you are in 5th and the turbo kicks in.
Last, though I have heard some horror stories, I did not have any trouble finding the needed parts so if you are into buying an old "gray ghost" like the 900 turbo and are into hunting around for parts and character building accessories, this is the car for you. I won't be giving up on this one for a while!
The 1986 c900 SPG's I believe to be the nicest SPG's ever made. It's a combination of true classic Saab with a touch of aggressive edge. I myself own one that is in bad shape to say the least - but I paid a small sum for it knowing this. I plan to build it up to a high performance show car/daily driver within the course of the next year or so. Currently I enjoy the drives I take in my 1987 Saab 9000 Turbo - my first Saab, and my first car I bought. I have caught the Saab bug, I've been Saab-washed some even call it. I am currently a head moderator on a large Internet based Saab forum. Some of you may even know of it - The Saab Link (saablink.net) If you have any questions about the line of car, or even about one of mine - feel free to contact me off that site - I go by the handle BurnsSide42 Happy Saabing!
