2000 Saturn SL SL1 review from North America
"The Saturn is an incredible, reliable car that is easy to maintain, and will last years"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
So far only one thing has gone wrong with my Saturn in the eight years I have owned it. During a long trip, about a year after purchasing the car, while driving, the cruise control stopped working suddenly. A few miles later, we heard a bang, then a clunk, and then drove over something. The explanation given to us was that a piston had blown through the engine, knocked off the oil gasket as well as a chunk of the engine block. The car was towed to a dealership (at Saturn's expense), they gave us a rental car for the two weeks it took to repair, and they completely replaced the engine.
General comments?
To date my Saturn is an awesome car. I decided to look into a Saturn after using a rental car that was a Saturn and falling in love with it. Upon purchasing my Saturn I definitely was not let down.
In a world where gas prices seem to be doing nothing but rising, my 2000 Saturn SL1, after eight years, is getting more than thirty miles per gallon. Upon first purchasing the car, it was doing close to 40 miles per gallon.
To date the only major repair the car has needed is when due to manufacture defect a piston blew through the car and knocked the oil gasket and part of the engine block off the car. Saturn took full responsibility for this, and replaced the engine with out any hassles at all.
We give our car regular oil changes, and have as long as we've owned the car. We also check the fluids regularly to make sure everything is good.
I have serious back problems, and a car needs to be comfortable both for the passenger, and the driver, and the Saturn SL1 is. I have plenty of leg room, and room to stretch and lay down as needed.
The car is also very roomy. This may be a bad description of the room of the car, but it's the best one I have. We've made four cross country trips, all of which at least once we needed to sleep in the car. The rear of the car - with the back seat lying down - left enough room for my husband, our 100 pound German Shepard, our 75 pound mix, and myself to sleep comfortably.
After owning a Mercury Sable - and having (the mechanic's words) "the transmission disintegrate" 500 miles from home, the Saturn has been an incredible car. My husband and I have both already decided that we will continue using Saturn vehicles.
