1994 Saturn SL SL2 review from North America
"One seriously reliable car and fun to drive"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
My poor car was hit with hail in the spring storm of 1995 in North Central Texas. The windshield was broken and water leaked onto my dash and down the crack there into some electronics. The damage to the electronics was only minor - sometimes I have to work the door locking switch a few times before it stays locked. The metal body parts of the car were damaged, but the plastic parts snapped right back like nothing had happened.
The car has gone thru about 3 batteries and one alternator - I figure the batteries died as a result of the weak alternator; I have had only this one main mechanical problem with the car.
The visor straps did indeed sag on both driver and passenger sides.
Plastic parts have begun to lose integrity in the Texas heat and some have stress fractures and chips. The plastic around the seat belt latches has come away, but the latches still work. The dashboard and most major parts still look quite new.
The engine has begun to use oil a bit more than it should. However, it still runs just as good as it ever did.
General comments?
Considering how much reliable and enjoyable service I've gotten from this well worn car over the years, I'm very happy to say that nothing serious has ever gone wrong with it.
I can't say how much my peace of mind has been improved by owning this car; it's a great feeling to be able to turn the key and hear the it start consistently. It gets me where I want to go when I want to get there with no complaint.
I really can't see myself owning any other kind of car, but a Saturn.
