The only things I can comment on are its appetite for tyres... at 23000 miles, all four tyres needed to be replaced, due to the original tracking, I had to hunt around and got Vredesteins for £80 each (that's cheap Kwik Fit quoted £140!!!) I thought that only happened to the VRS!!!
It's much more reliable than the BMW, much cheaper to service...
The car is very comfortable to drive, after 7 and a half hours back from Edinburgh, I just had the merest of back aches, mind you I had to pay £200 for the i-pod kit to entertain me...
For a 2 litre petrol 38mpg average for a 600 miles trip is pretty good, in the middle of France a managed 42 mpg 4 up with a bootful of clobber... mind you I'll think about a diesel next... hmmm vrs 2.0 tdi methinks!
It has a humongous boot, we managed to fit 4 people's luggage in for a week with room to spare; coming from a 1 series, it's a concert hall in comparison!
If considering luggage space and value for money when ranking a car, there is no doubt that a Skoda Octavia is one of the best and a BMW 3 is utter crap. But I think you should consider a lot more aspects of a car and overall I think the BMW 3 series simply is a better car then the Octavia. The only (big) advantage of the Octavia is the price.
The problem with BMW is that you pay a lot of money for the badge, and I wish BMW would create a budget brand (like Audi vs Skoda) with about the same quality without the expensive snobbyness.
