2001 smart fortwo - city coupe Pulse review from North America

"Cute (=girly) car, great for in-city use but please, keep it there. Highay is a big NO with Smarts"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Tiny engine uses only 3 liters of oil so when you're low you're already very close to serious damage to the engine.

General comments?

First off, this wasn't my car, it was my mothers and I just used it since mine was being restored (1984 Camaro).

The Smart is a true city car, you don't want to drive it elsewhere. On highways, it's not only slow and has poor acceleration anywhere above 3rd gear, it's also tiny and it's rather scary driving this vehicle around big rigs.

The Smart stock stereo is by the renowned German consumer electronics manufacturer Grundig which, ridiculously, only is AM/FM, no tape or CD (unless yo udecide to buy that option at Mercedes-Benz typical option pricing).

The car is cheap on gas and you can park it nearly anywhere. However, since Mercedes-Benz is the "mother" of Smart, they're quite pricy to service but, unlike real Benzes, Smarts really don't have anything remotely close to comfort.

Overall, if you live in a large city, I could kind of recommend the car you should, however, be female to pull it off and preferably not live in New York City since road conditions there surprise you with pot holes big enough to swallow that little four-wheeled peanut.

Just to round up the picture, I currently own the Camaro (still being worked on to get'er back to cherry), a Lincoln Town Car Signature Series and a Lincoln Continental.
