1987 Subaru 1800 GL review from UK and Ireland
"Go anywhere reliably in comfort. Winter wonder car"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
CV joint, but only because I was driven into by nissan driver.
Exhaust.
Radiator split again driven into in night whilst asleep. The perpetrator didn't stop.
Ball joint. Subaru couldn't get 1 for 2 weeks idiots gave me a bearing of some kind at first.
General comments?
Best car ever made bar none. OK it's slow for 1800 but that's not what this estate is all about. I've previously owned 3door hatch back version. These cars beat Land Rovers in snow. Me and Friend went out in deep snow. He couldn't get landy out so tried Subaru and made it. I was plowing through deep virgin snow deeper than the bonnetin places 20 miles across the moors road near my house. Fantastic on ice or deep mud with 4wd lo ratio.
Great load lugger but did need 4wd lo to keep on mountain road when loaded down. This model returned around 40mpg in 2wd. MUCH less in 4wd hi or low.
Never let me down until driven into on way home. This wrecked cv joint but I couldn't tell for 2 weeks. About to change when...
Woke one morning to find creased bumper and floor wet. Some so+so had driven into it in night and driven away.
Subaru wanted far too much for cv and radiator, nobody else within 50 miles had replacements so scrapped. Now have legacy 2l estate and I prefer ruggedness of olg L-series estate especially the economy.
Only ever replaced 1 ball joint, Exhaust and front tyres. Never wore back tyres out in the 25000 miles I drove car before sending to crusher.
