1999 Subaru Forester L review from North America
"One of the best I've owned"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
CV boot cut at 150,000 replaced both axles
factory rotors replaced at 174,000
burns about a quart of synthetic about once every 4500mi
externally leaks coolant
right rear wheel bearing went after 184,000
pulls to the right (previous owner hit a deer)
cruse control died at 191,000.
General comments?
My Subaru has been great! I haven't had any problems that wouldn't relate to a car that is about to roll over the 200,000 mark. I have put high end synthetic oils into the transmission, rear end, and the engine since I have owned it. before I put a WRX converter back exhaust it used to get in the high 20's or even the low 30's. I put on a set of high performance all season tires and it seems like it doesn't stumble in the corners as much as it used to. it tackles snow without any hesitation and I have only gotten it stuck once, due to my curious nature, trying to plow through three and one half feet of snow. I don't see the problems that the other owners have in their foresters. I have realized that the forester is just an Impreza with a different body and have come to accept that it won't go through 5 and a half feet of snow or through a mud puddle big enough to swallow a car whole. over all it has been a great car and I wouldn't hesitate to drive it to Alaska.
