2001 Subaru Forester S review from North America
"The vehicle is very poorly designed for longevity, and it's expensive to repair"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The check engine light started going on at about 40k, and I took my 2001 Forester S in 3 times for this before they said the oxygen sensor needed replacing at a cost of $700. Shortly after that, the catalytic convertor needed replacing.
The clock stopped working.
The dashboard bin lid cracked.
The shifter grinds.
I have also had to replace the front windshield due to cracks from flying debris.
Now, at 61,000 miles, the rear wheel bearings are shot and so is the transmission. I have only ever taken my vehicle to Subaru dealers. I had the oil changed and the vehicle and fluids checked before driving from Florida to California. The dealer here says the transmission fluid is empty, but not leaking.
I wonder if anyone else out there has had this problem, and why and how this could happen. The dealer will not stand behind me, although I have never taken the vehicle to any other shop since owning it until last month when I drove it cross country and brought it to a Subaru dealer in California because of the transmission problem. They say it needs a new transmission.
It seems as though my problems are the same as everyone else, and Subaru should listen as they will lose much business from us when we go to buy new cars. I doubt I would buy another since Subaru refuses to correct these issues or re-call the faulty parts and stand behind the repairs.
General comments?
The vehicle is comfortable with the lumbar heated seats.
The pick-up is fast for a 4 cylinder.
The mechanicals need serious attention and re-designing for longevity.
