1990 Subaru GL Touring Wagon review from Australia and New Zealand
"Excellent and reliable multi purpose 4x4 wagon"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Only one real thing has gone wrong with the car... a timing belt blew going up a hill... no more power. (occurred at 89000km)
Occasionally get a little bit of pinging from engine at higher revs/loads, but was mostly solved by using premium unleaded and spraying 'Subaru upper engine cleaner' in the intake manifold every service.
Very, very, very minor oil leak from head gaskets... but nothing to worry about.
General comments?
An excellent car all round!
I bought mine at a dealer in Melbourne (so I paid a little too much for it) but it was worth it because it was a one owner vehicle with full service history and ultra low km's.
The car has 2x4 high range, 4x4 high and 4x4 low which is great for going up to the snow and on dirt tracks.
Offroading is limited by its ground clearance, but I didn't buy it for serious bush 4x4ing anyway.
It gets great economy, in the city about 500km's for 50 liters.
Everything still works e.g. aircon, electric windows/mirrors, central locking and power steering
There is heaps of room in the back with the seats folded down - and you can sleep in there if need be.
I service the car when it is supposed to be serviced and don't abuse it so will hopefully get many more km's out of it. (Subaru dealer serving is a bit too expensive so after it has it's 100000km service I am going to go to a private Subaru repairer)
