2002 Subaru Impreza WRX PPP review from UK and Ireland

"Delightful.."

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Nothing, but that's to be expected after 155,000 miles in 3 previous Impreza Turbos. However, it's a delight to return to Subaru reliability after the dismal showing of it's predecessor (Seat Leon Cupra 20VT).

General comments?

Stunning performance, and I don't even need to add, "for a 4 Door Family Saloon"... The Prodrive Performance Package (PPP) makes a big difference, sorting the slight breathlessness above 6K RPM of the standard WRX. It makes the car more tractable too, and the car pulls like it was in at least a gear lower than it is.

Excellent handling, with a hint of understeer, but easily dialled out using the throttle. Superb cross country ability, where it soaks up bumps and takes on poor road surfaces with disdain. Decent ride too.

The brakes are a huge improvement on previous models, which were a weakness.

The interior's better too - still rattle free, with outstanding seats - comfortable, whilst still clamping you tight during fast cornering.

Running costs are reasonable and for me the difference in insurance between this 4WD, 265 bhp would be "Supercar", and the disappointing Seat Leon, is £60 ($90) per year. No big deal.

Service costs are pretty good, and of course are carried out with the total efficiency expected of a Subaru dealer.

On short runs, or around town, fuel consumption dips to around 23/24 mpg. Over distance, it improves to about 28. A touring holiday of the Highlands of Scotland, produced a best of 31 mpg. Overall, it uses 10% more fuel than the Leon Cupra.

Would we buy another? We should be adding a 5Dr WRX to keep the 4Dr company on the driveway very soon.

Oh yes, and I LOVE the way it looks!
