"A high performance bargain"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Nothing, its still new.

General comments?

The 2.5-liter turbocharged powerplant is the largest displacement engine ever installed in a WRX STi model and is exclusive to the North American market. It is the most powerful 4-cylinder engine available in the US. Until now, STi-badged Subaru vehicles had been available only in select world markets.

The success of the WRX prompted strong demand from American consumers for an even more extreme-performance version of this car. As a result, the U.S.-market Impreza WRX STi gives up nothing compared to models offered in Europe, Japan and other markets and in some ways offers more performance.

Would love to try this 2.5 model here in the UK, but mapped for the 98 octane fuel which is readily available on the high street. I'd bet it would go like a ballistic missile.

Shame we pay the equivalent of $5 a gallon for said fuel though...

The WRX is a fantastic car-its accelerates like a rocket on steriods. Please tell us a little more about the interior, driving characteristics etc.!

The Sti in the US is the same spec as the Japanese ones. I don't think the American model is faster than any of the other STis! Having said that though, they are as rare as anything in the States, so you have made a fine choice!

My recent STI test-drive confirms the incredible and constant torque of this world-class engine. It felt faster than the EVO, and way faster of course than my MR2-Spyder, which is fairly quick due to its low weight. Did you like the road feel? While the STI was fast and sticky through turns, the handling did not feel as natural to me as the EVO or my own humble 2002 Spyder. There is so much power it is almost scary when you put your foot in it, no?
