1999 Subaru Impreza WRX review from Australia and New Zealand

"Terrific and affordable driver's car that offers handling and speed"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Air flow meter errors caused by filter oil.

It got stolen.

General comments?

Very good car stock. But even better when modified.

Four wheel drive eliminates wheelspin on stationary starts. It is difficult to lose traction unless seriously provoked.

Steering is sharp and accurate.

Brutal turbo acceleration, relatively low level of turbo lag although it is still noticeable below 2500rpms. The car provides a genuine shove in the backa acceleration. Overtaking accerleration is also excellent provided turbo is spooled up. Top speeds can be reached with ease.

Ride is rough and the car tends to jump on uneven roads. But stiff ride reduces body roll and the car corners confidently. More of an understeerer than an oversteerer.

Brakes are very good in everyday situations, which is important for a car that can travel quite fast. When pushed to its limits however, the brakes don't bite as hard as you would expect them to. Notwithstanding, the brakes are of a very high quality.

5-Speed manual transmission is a treat when warmed up. Short throw and slick shifting although it is notchy sometimes and stubborn in shifting when the gearbox is cold.

Standard bucket seats are excellent. A good compromise between function and comfort. Interior panels look cheap and feel even cheaper. Leather steering wheel and shiftknob only highlights. Steering wheel a little too big perhaps, though small turns to lock compensates.

Rear passenger seats not too flash, but space all round is quite good. Boot space is also quite good.

Maintenance costs are high, the car drinks petrol like there is no tomorrow. Brakes and tyres wear much quicker than a normal car even if it is driven sedately around town.

Car is cheap to buy, but expensive to insure. Plus it is a target for theft.
