2002 Subaru Impreza WRX review from North America
"Great performance, excellent value"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Nothing as of yet.
General comments?
I researched very intensively before purchasing this car. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase. The car has almost unlimited performance potential. In fact, there are a few things any WRX owner should do, performance-wise, to obtain the best from their WRX. A turbo timer is a must. This allows the engine to continue to run for a short time after the key is removed in order for the turbo to properly cool down. WRX's run rather lean from the factory, so any reliabilty or safety upgrades are a wise investment. The car itself is very quick, has a strong midrange, and excellent driveability. It is smooth on the road, and nothing feels better than dropping a gear and watching the horizon blast towards you or other drivers vanish in your mirrors.
My car does have a bit of understeer, not something I would have expected from a car of its rally heritage. I hear a few extra pounds of air in the rear tires helps a bit.
When the engine is cold, the transmission will stumble a bit. I hear this is common, and results from a lack of heat and lubrication in the tranny while the car is warming up. No worries, though.
Overall, again, a very good performance bargain.
