Blew clutch up at 73000.
Replaced gearbox 3 times in 6000 kms.
Motor snapped valves at 103200 got motor reconditoned $4900.
New motor melted piston at 103900.
I have don't have any problems with the cars acceleration or handling as it feels like a jet taking off and handles like sh*t on a blanket.
Quicker and handles better than a evo 2, 3, and a 5 as proven in my town.
Don't beat the crap out of it and it'll stay running and in one piece.
We just recently purchased an import 1997 wrx sti 5 door. This car is standard at 300bhp, handles fantastically and humiliate porsches etc, giving us immense grin factor when the drivers faces change from smugness to sheer annoyance that their £40000 pride and joy has just got its arse kicked by a £8000 japanese car. Obviously it is thirsty, but if you keep it under 3500 revs in 5th and keep the turbo from spinning up, you might get 30 to the gallon on the motorway hovering just around 70. If you want to annoy any of the supercar owners than dont expect it to get much into double figures... My only complaint is that in the wet it has a tendancy to understeer, but this might be the tyres or my entry speed.
Comments would be appreciated,
thanks, Steve, (urbantiger99@aol.com)
The understeer is an unfortunate characteristic of all wheel drive. You will find that that tendency is GREATLY reduced by running a stiffer rear sway bar. Whiteline makes them. I have a 18 - 22mm adjustable one and at 22mm the back end will come out on command, every time.
Just bought a 1995 STi wagon.. fastest thing I've ever driven, considering I driven a 3.0 V6 twin turbo GTO.. yet it would never come close to the scooby in acceleration or handling.. I can throw the wagon in to a 30km corner at 90+km and come out the other side sideways.. never once have I come across all this under-steer that people talk about?? Maybe mine just has a mind of its own.. but NO regrets buying the STi WRX.. AT ALL.
The STi version 2 94-96 is the very best, so untouchable, bigger so called super cars have very little chance on 0-60 runs or quarter of a mile. They are show winners and deserve the credit they get.
Japanese imports are crazy. lighter than UK spec and more powerful. Just don't try racing them unless you have a Ferrari or something like it.
My mate tried racing a silver one with a pink sunstrip in Sittingbourne in his Porsche, and got well beaten at the lights.
Don't blink or you'll miss em.
10/10 in my opinion.
Just look after them, simple as that.
