1999 Subaru Legacy 2.5GT Limited review from North America

"This is a great car and I am confident that it will run past 200,000 miles"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

I had to replace the clutch at 75,000 miles, got new valve covers at 88,000 miles. All standard repairs on aging car.

The speedometer quit working at 85,000 miles and required replacing at my expense. Apparently this is a common problem for the '99s, though Subaru refuses to issue any sort of service bulletin.

General comments?

This is by no means a fast car, but at the time it offered power that competed with the V6 engines found in the Camry and Accord. Where this car really shines is the handling. Even at 95,000 miles the suspension still allows this car to handle the curves with minimal body roll and spectacular agility.

This car is also capable of 30+ mpg on the highway (when cruising around 70 MPH) despite being All Wheel Drive.

I've been in some pretty deep snow in this vehicle and some slippery spots on some steep hills and I haven't ever been stuck in a situation that the All Wheel Drive couldn't get me out of.

The interior is decent is for the time period that it is from. My leather has not cracked and the seats are still comfortable. The sunroof still opens and closes as it should, as do all of the windows.

My only true complaint about this car (besides not being offered in a turbo) is that the clutch was a very expensive repair, however that could just be the dealer I took it to.
