Hey Trisha... as for that height button, I had that feature two Legacies ago, on a 1991 "executive" model, with all the bells and whistles available at that time. The height button uses the air shocks to raise the height of the car a few inches for a little more clearance when you take it off-road. If I remember correctly it would automatically switch off over a certain speed and lower the car back down to normal height since it wasn't safe to drive very fast with the car elevated. In the few years I owned that car the air lift system needed expensive repairs twice, which I learned is common. Apparently this "feature" is so unreliable that most owners just have the lifter shocks replaced with regular ones and have done with it. In fact, Subaru had so much trouble with it they stopped offering adjustable height on the Legacy a few years later (yours might have been the last year.)

It sounds like yours is already failing since it should lift front and back together, not just the rear. I can't remember now whether the lift was supposed to be about 3.5" or more like 5".

I don't really understand how this site works, but to the very first poster:

You had an obviously incompetent mechanic servicing your timing belt. Not only did they screw up your ride, but they overcharged you big time. I have exactly your problem with the smoking. A little research, $13.99 for 2 camshaft seals, 2 camshaft cover o-rings fixed it right up. While I was at it I went ahead and changed the timing belt, pulleys and the water pump just because I figured they were due. All in all took me about 6hrs.

Your mechanic installed the timing belt with the cams misaligned. Because of that you got poor fuel economy, poor performance and eventually your valves get screwed up. I recommend never going to that shop again.

I have a 1995 Legacy wagon. The shifter will not always come out of park. Sometimes I have to wait 5 minutes. I read that there is a small device in the console that if lubricated will fix the problem. Can someone tell me exactly where it is located? Thanks L.
