1991 Subaru Loyale 4wd wagon review from North America
"A great little car, but Subaru does have better models!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
It required a complete radiator at 150,000
miles.
It seems to eat CV joints every 70,000 miles or so.
It required a new oil pump at 180,000 miles.
Started to rust noticeably at about 200,000 miles (which isn't bad for Wisconsin a real heavy salt state.)
Timing belts and alternator belts must be replaced at exactly the recommended interval. 1000 miles more and you'll be sitting by the roadside.
It had recurring problems with the rear axles nuts loosening up. They must be torqued using a high capacity torque wrench and then 30-40 lbs. over spec.
When the master window control goes out it is a $130 part cost to replace it.
General comments?
One tough little vehicle, however when you need repairs they are expensive. The engine on mine has 247,000 miles and uses less than a pint of oil in 3000 miles.
The vehicle is a turtle at acceleration, but plows through snow like a tank. It is actually fun to drive in heavy snow.
Steering is exceptional and gives you great hazard avoidance (as in a family of raccoons at 70mph at night).
