The entire clutch/flywheel assembly is being replaced for the THIRD time this week by Subaru (at their cost).I have experienced severe clutch shudder problems, especially when cold, but also when warm on occasion.
The car also burns an excessive amount of oil. I am currently seeking to return the car under the Washington State Lemon Law.
DO NOT BUY THIS VEHICLE WITH A MANUAL TRANSMISSION!!!I've talked with other owners who have automatics and they have not had any problems.
Overall, the car is comfortable and has reasonable performance, but I cannot recommend it because of the continuing drivetrain problems.
BE aware. I own a 1996 outback and have had the same problem with my clutch over and over again the district manager even came out and looked at our car and said nothing was wrong and now our clutch is popping out of 3rd and 5th gear and has been discovered Trans. is bad, which was the cause all along as to why clutch was not acting right (i have now learned if trans. is bad or not linked right with the clutch, pressure plate, etc. it will effect the clutch performance and over a period of time the Trans. will go out. And now since our warranty is gone Subaru does not want to help us even though they have all our records showing us complaning about our clutch performance while car was under warranty. I feel they should take responsibility for not pin pointing the problem or just out right lying when they knew we had a trans. problem..
Should not have to replace a clutch over and over again as we have had to do. If I was you I would have your Trans. looked at, something is not right. If you do a little research you will see this is a pretty common problem...
